Not really, as it occurred in the final four seasons of proper Super Rugby (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).

The more I think about that try the more I think it was a planned option from the Chiefs.
Chiefs first try they had a wider blind and they put two players there. Aaron Smith stays on that side but PGS traps the ball until told to use it and breaks with an 8/9 to the open. Smith is stuck on the wrong side of the scrum and can't get around to help the defence.
Second try Chiefs initially put the winger behind the scrum with body turned toward the first open channel. Landers winger moves over to add to the line there and if you watch Smith he looks at their set up about three times . Chiefs backs act ready to run a move and he gets sucked into running to the back of the scrum. PGS picks and runs immediately while the scrum is still pushing hard. He is already well on the move before any break is called. Having the 9 run back is an indication to the blindside flanker that his side isn't in danger as well.
Smith does actually realise quickly (he changes direction back as soon as he is behind his 8 but the open door plus the pressure from the Chiefs scrum on their loosehead side has also meant that Frizzel is compromised.
I actually wonder if anyone called that PGS had lifted the ball because the whole Landers scrum keeps scrummaging.Up to that point the Chiefs had worked 8/9s to the open as their standard. The change up worked.

seriously? they jump to catch the ball...is that going to be considered illegal? maybe smith should have been carded for trying to tackle someone off the ground...thats the same thing isn't it?

Sinckler jumped into a tackle catching a bad pass and received a penalty for his troubles. That decided a Lions Test.

It’s a bizarre ruling. Dangerous play is the same law for head high tackles. If a player sticks their arm out high but the ball carrier dodges the impact it’s just play on. The act is dangerous but nothing happened. Same as this.

how is this dangerous play but jumping over a group of other players to try and take the ball is fine, more than fine that player is protected under the rules
at least PGS was in possession and so had actual control of the game, someone jumping for a catch is still speculative

@kiwiwomble I guess an issue (someone bought up in the match thread) what if Smith had made solid contact with PGS while he was in the air and PGS ended up landing on his head?
Who gets pinged then, I would put money on AS getting pinged, probably a card.
Sinckler attracting the pen in the Lions by jumping someone sucked too, and he got all uppity and wanted to fight someone over it.
No easy answer really, unless we stop jumping except at lineouts...

Edit: in seriousness though - probably easier to just let players jump into the tackle if they have possession, and let people tackle them however....jump at your own risk.

Diving for a try it's covered under the laws, jumping over a tackler has always been a penalty, rightly, from what I've seen. Looks awesome when it works, recipe for disaster if the jumper doesn't make it. It's the right choice, and what most thought was the laws, reading through press. Ref on the day got it wrong, that's why they asked to get it 100% confirmed

There’s loads of stuff that is dangerous IF it goes wrong but only WHEN it goes wrong
Running with your elbow out. Not called unless there is contact.
Swinging high arm. Not called unless there is contact.
Even throwing a full blooded punch is waved away unless it connects.
One of the worst is sliding in at try scorers with the knees which is never called unless damage is done.
If you hurdle a tackle and kick the tackler in the head then by all means get a card but the very nature of the act is that it is only ever done when the runner is pretty sure they are going to avoid contact.
Like @taniwharugby says, if Smith had clipped the feet it would have been a nightmare decision. Personally I would have called no fault. PGS jumped into a tackle.
