Not having a go at you, but that implies that Karl is the winning and losing of the series, as we don't have good enough looseheads behind him. That won't change if the next set of players don't get to play against the best scrummagers this year, rather than next. It also means that he has hitched his ride to Moody. It's nice to old in the current ABs, you can have a guaranteed spot even if you're on the decline.
Yeah i'm not saying I agree with the approach - i'm just communicating the rationate. Personally i'd have De Groot in there instead and I'd have Hodgman very close.
I figured, as would I.
Hodgman is leaving. That's my prediction.

Which is bullshit. Firstly if you have committed overseas than that absolutely should count against you. And secondly being under pressure is exactly what these young looseheads need to experience, because it's these guys who are most likely going to come under the blowtorch come the World Cup. Pressure makes diamonds etc
Isn’t that what Ross and Bower will get though. They will be in that pressure cooker for 30-40 minutes at a minimum.
Except Karl T as a safety net is undermining that pressure cooker environment. He's not gonna be there at the world cup.
And it's worth repeating, why pay someone and invest in them (a not insignificant amount of money) when they've committed themselves overseas.

Outside of RWC years, usually if you have signed elsewhere, you miss out.

Not true, they always say they pick the best team available. But if it's close they'll pick the one that's staying. Piutau was not picked cos they wanted someone else. Not saying they always make the right picks, but that is a consistent line from the selectors

Seems strange not to replace Lord, even with a lock. Surely it's worth looking at someone?
Adding Robinson would at least put pressure on Vaai to perform as the lock/blindside and give an option to replace him if he gets injured.

I don’t think it implies that at all. My guess is that they’ve done an assessment of what they’ve seen in Super rugby and balanced that up with what they know about the Irish and said we can’t have 3 greenish looseheads so we need one experienced one involved.
Some will say that’s a pox on development or just a cattle issue or just an unfortunate thing with our frontline loosehead out. That can be debated, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have an experienced guy in the mix. How much he plays will be interesting.

There’s quite a bit in the Players agreement around being named in the first squad of the season. If they really needed someone else they would call them in but it does complicate things slightly
