Some bloody good names there. Pringle, Boock and Mark Craig get a mention too.

Pringle decided if you can't beat them (the Pakistani bowlers) with ball tampering, join them.

He sure did. I don’t blame him in the slightest for doing it.

Rigor admitted to doing it too. The old drag the ball through the gutter trick

If it wasn't for all those dropped catches by South Africa in the pork 🙂 we probably would've got rolled in the mid 90's as well... now it's up to us to make the most of it & put some really good partnerships together & get a bloody good lead on them.

Stead confirmed last night that Nicholls will move up to 4 and Mitchell will bat at 5. If Henry replaces Boult then it is CdG vs Ravindra for the 7 spot.

Apart from saving the first test in India I'd suggest Ravindra hasn't exactly ripped up trees. Considering his record in NZ conditions, despite his poor performance of late, I'd probably pick Colin

Yeah, Ravindra has done stuff all, Colin would have to start over him... also with Williamson missing we need as much experience as we can get in our batting against a team like South Africa.

Hope Matt Henry isn't picked in the 11, why does this bloke continued to get selected in test squads ? ...he doesn't swing it, doesn't use a slower ball or use the width of the crease, he totally relies on a seaming wicket, his bowling average is very poor, 46.

Just want to acknowledge NZBloke for this superb rant writing off Henry before the match, ensuring he goes on to take a bag of wickets.

I was also guilty of writing Mr Henry off.
I'm happy to eat humble pie, so well done sir.

    BC's should make 300 minimum from here....surely.

Me too. I figure we naysayers were the vital motivation he needed. You're welcome

I would doubt we make 300. Although we have had enough luck to do so, so maybe.

IIRC, all 6 innings by India in the recent SAF v IND series were all sub-300. Wouldn't expect much different here. Almost same attack, similar lively pitch, just as frail batting.

@rapido ... and no KW. He's at his best on pitches like this I reckon.

All credit to Henry for his bowling performance in this test... but before this test his bowling record was bloody abysmal, which is why I & others got stuck into him, so at the time those comments were obviously deserved.

Henry also was hitting around 140 ks quite a bit.
Extra pace was good he hit the pitch nice and hard instead of kissing the pitch,It makes a big difference on the bounces pitches.
Rabada still a big threat he is World class.Although Jansen is a threat with his bounce,Olivier will be the problem consistent line and length hitting that 6 to 8 m length and nipping it away,He is always a threat.
We might have to graft out the first session.

Henry's record before yesterday as an opening bowler had actually been fairly reasonable. It was his record when selected as 3rd or 4th seamer that stunk out his record.

    Opening: 8 matches, 24 wickets, average 35.75
    First & Second change: 7 matches, 13 wickets , average 65.69

I say reasonable. It isn't as good as CdG's record when given the new ball for e.g.

(After yesterday he now averages 28.41 as new ball bowler)

So, last year, when Henry replaced Wagner as 4th seamer at Hgley. I thought it was a ridiculous selection. Should have chosen Ajaz, even though Hagley ....
(although, Henry actually bowled really well in that match as 4th seamer but was unlucky)

This year, as a Boult replacement,as per earlier inn the thread ..... I was all good with it. So, spotters badge for me ...

We've been quite blessed with our 3rd and 4th seamers this last era. Well, veeeeeeery blessed with Wagner and Jamieson.

But credit goes to de Grandhomme and even Doug Bracewell before him. It is not an easy job, should be considered a specialist position.

Look at these specialist opening bowlers' records in that position (even if small sample sizes):

Really rate Olivier, has a good fluent action too.

Vital that we can build some really good partnerships.

2 good partnerships and we are in a good position,
We need a 200 plus lead then SA are fighting to stay in the game.
A lot of time left in this test.We get rolled with a 50 or 60 run lead and we have wasted a brilliant first day.

Hasn’t Wagner always been in that position. The stats nerd in me notes his average is slightly higher than his overall career figure ?

Wagner on fire. Three fours in a row !

It must be fun being a night watchman provided you survive overnight. If he scores great, if he doesn’t no great loss.

    Wags doing two things

Scoring a few bonus runs to push the game along
Settling the nerves of the 4 run scorers to come, who would have been a little edgy about things this morning, but have probably just settled down a little

So we've solved the issue of who to bat #5 with Nicholls shifting up after Taylor's retirement...
