His job was not to score hundreds or fucking take bags
His job was to bat at the death, find the gap, and tick the score over. Being not out in 30% of his digs shows he probably did that well.
With the ball he was supposed to bowl quick cheap over after quick cheap over. And be a gun in the field.Canny fucking cricketer who would still be in our T20 team these days i reckon. Probably doesn't make the 50-over side in the modern game. But who knows?

I never said he was terrible, I said he had modest returns. He was an ok player in his day and we often lacked those.
Besides, after your assertion that Matthew Hayden was a flat track bully I’m not sure I’ve paid too much attention to your cricket talk to be honest.

@mariner4life gilly and Michael Vaughan ( whose been excellent) mentioned him the other day, with a tone of definite irreverence. Gilly saying often he tried to smash him out of the ground but seldom could and came unstuck on more than one occasion.
It was nice to hear.

"I never said he was terrible, I said he had modest returns."
Modest returns at stats relatively irrelevant to his role, like wondering what all the fuss was with Shane Bond when he has zero run outs from backward point. Or zero rescued run chases.
Anyway. Also doesn't seem to understand difference between fan favourites from greats.
I thought the 90s was his thing?

Grant Elliot has come in to bat and they managed to say “hairy javelin” 3 times in ten seconds. Once might have been humorous……Top hitting from Tom Walsh, for a big fella he's pretty good in the field too - yeah, those commentators are trying too hard to be funny, so come across as pillocks.
This event is a really fun watch every year - we have all played at least some backyard cricket & a lot of the rugby players have played plenty of youth cricket, so they're always going to perform decently at least against the cricketers.
Yeah I’m not convinced. I still struggle with the fact an ex AB captain managed to hit Bondy for six, it was only 20 or so years ago he had Ponting, Gilly, Hayden and whoever else jumping and dodging and getting out during a fantastic six wicket spell
No doubt those cricketers are well past their best, unfortunately when we all get a bit older your reaction time isn't as good, not as quick around field, but that doesn't take away the huge amount of experience & cunning they have, Vettori is a good example of that - was really impressed with Bonds pace in his first few overs, then he looked like he hurt his back, that's when Read smashed him into the stands... both openers struggled a bit at the start against some very good pace & accuracy from Bond & Mills, but real credit to Read & Jordon putting on 100 partnership, showing composure & playing plenty of good cricket shots, setting up a great platform for the win.

If they wanted to ensure it was close at the end of the game they could always bring in super sub Tuffey out of the sheds for a 14 ball doubly wubly over.

Fucken hell, you’d think I’d compared him to Justin Vaughan or someone judging from the grief I’m getting.

In the 99 CWC 300 was only scored 3 times in the whole tournament.
I read an article that said in 1999 the average strike rate of batsmen in ODIs was 73.47 and in 2019 the average strike rate was 92.18.
Harry these days wouldn't be nearly as valuable as he was in the 90s. Different era.

Harry fan here as well. Best in the field, good at slowing the economy rate, anchor of a batsman saving us from some low scores on multiple times.
But mainly because of two thing.
- The game where he hit two 6's and the tv camera's actually managed to follow the ball. For the young 'uns on the board, when players used to hit a 6 you used to stare at nothing as the definition / lighting was so bad you could never see the ball until it came down to the crowd and you saw people jumping for it.
- Side on run out in the opening match of the 92 world cup.
