Looking like the pre-season games on Friday will still go ahead?I'm guessing that the Women's Waratahs team my not make it across the ditch given flight disruptions.
I live in Hamilton but know that there is flooding and slips in Te Kohanga by the river. A Civil Defence base set up at Onewhero Rugby club. My mum is in Tuakau, everything ok there, the neighbour lost half a tree. The last event was worse I think.
Here in Hamilton it was constant rain but not too heavy. A lot of wind. I can hear chainsaws today. Blue cloudy sky today with wind.

Did he get in? I must admit yesterday morning I thought what is all the fuss about but the Auckland weather got waaay worse and i realised we were just very very lucky with the timing of our flight.
Have had to cancel the planned trip to hot water beach, my parents refused the camp offer of a refund saying they know they need the money - owner was really grateful says he will shout the staff morning tea with it. So we head directly to rotorua instead.
Have experienced a few kiwi classics today: flat white, cheese scones…and single-glazed windows…

We are some of the lucky ones, a few tree branches down, no actual damage, and our power has just returned (in the end, only about 40 hours out of last 72) few gusts of wind still about but things calmed massively.
I was at work this morning and there was a very eerie lack of contact from clients, I expect that flood of calls will come as things start to return to normal.
Some of the images/video of the destruction around the North island is heart breaking.
HIKURANGI Swamp flooded, again...usually no water there but it was a swamp so always susceptible to flooding

Swampland is the natural soak hole that is needed. Too much wetland and swamp has been drained or filled which doesn’t help in times like this. I’m no scientist but I guess your area is lucky to have that swamp.

That is a very, very ugly sea. That rescue is an outstanding achiivement by the crew of HMNZS Te Kaha with support from the Northland Rescue helicopter.
NEWS 📢 A man on a catamaran in distress has been rescued and is safe on board Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Mana.
The man was rescued by personnel on a small boat (RHIB) launched from Te Mana, while crew on a Northland Rescue Helicopter provided overwatch for the safety of all involved.
Maritime Component Commander Commodore Garin Golding said sea conditions had been challenging and everyone involved was pleased the person was now safe on board the ship.

Long time lurker. Love this place.
I’m a winemaker in HB but spread time in Ak too. In AK at the moment with kids and wife as I thought I’d try and get in between the shit and the fan. Returned from the Yarra Valley in 2021 to start up fresh. Covid and all.
A good friend has potentially lost everything in Esk Valley. 4 metres under water.
Restaurant, vineyard (esp 2023 grapes, I was going to buy some), equipment and home. It’s absolutely devastating.
Not sure I will harvest any 2023 grapes but yet to know full situation.
Family in Waipawa and on Bluff Hill. No contact since 10am but they should be fine if they can light the bbq.
I’m trying to get down asap to help out but unaware of situation. SH5 appears to be closed for at least a week. Friends family is in Te Pohue on Napier/Taupo and it’s absolutely ruined.
Situation is really mad. Lots of losses for everyone.!

It sounds like he was anchored at Great Barrier Island but his mooring broke and he was blown out to sea. He then tried to start his engine but that failed as well.
I am no real sailor, but I would have thought selecting a good anchorage and checking that your important equipment is functioning would have been a good idea given the bad weather approaching. -

@DMack @Stargazer just heart breaking for so many.
For those with insurance, unfortunately it can't and wont cover everything and some will still be unable to bounce back, then there are those without it (by choice or not) this cyclone to go on top of the Auckland floods, devastating to so many families and businesses.
