Mine is a wee bit flasher and is 'smart'.

Our lock predated us buying the house - but I am a bit cautious of those connected locks. Havea few friends in IT security, and they aren't enthusiastic.

When all is said and done, locks make you feel safer, but doors come out of frames, windows get broken, etc.

I'm under zero illusion security wise and have always been of the mind that f someone wants in they will find a way in no problem (I do so myself).
Key locks are just as easily bypassed as electronic. If you think anything with a key is secure you need to watch some 'lock picking lawyer' videos on youtube.
Locks are only there to slow people down or remove opportunist situations.
This is probably a discussion for another time/thread though.

Taradale residents advised to evacuate. I think the Tutaekuri is the biggest issue causing that

    How's Pukekohe fairing @mikedogz ?
Looking like the pre-season games on Friday will still go ahead?

I'm guessing that the Women's Waratahs team my not make it across the ditch given flight disruptions.

No way the Chiefs would have wanted to be training outside yesterday afternoon. Rain and strong winds all evening and into the early morning in the Waikato. Plenty of trees have fallen down, including outside a house across the road from me, but thankfully no major flooding compared to up north.

@Crucial Now add Omahu Waiohiki Jervoistown and Meeanee

Flood protection on Tutaekuri has failed.

We are due to drive down early Thursday - if roads are open

Gabrielle better not interfere with my (two) Gin Distillery events 😠

@Crucial Yes, I've family members and friends who have had to evacuate. It's awful in many areas in Hawke's Bay. Almost all of Eskdale is flooded, Omahu and more.

Very hard to reach people by phone or internet.

Widespread power outages and Transpower has said that it could take days to weeks (not: hours) before power is restored everywhere.

I live in Hamilton but know that there is flooding and slips in Te Kohanga by the river. A Civil Defence base set up at Onewhero Rugby club. My mum is in Tuakau, everything ok there, the neighbour lost half a tree. The last event was worse I think.

Here in Hamilton it was constant rain but not too heavy. A lot of wind. I can hear chainsaws today. Blue cloudy sky today with wind.

A friend of mine is scheduled to fly into Auckland airport at midday on Monday. Might get a bit hairy.

Did he get in? I must admit yesterday morning I thought what is all the fuss about but the Auckland weather got waaay worse and i realised we were just very very lucky with the timing of our flight.

Have had to cancel the planned trip to hot water beach, my parents refused the camp offer of a refund saying they know they need the money - owner was really grateful says he will shout the staff morning tea with it. So we head directly to rotorua instead.

Have experienced a few kiwi classics today: flat white, cheese scones…and single-glazed windows…

@Billy-Tell - yeah, good work by your folks.
Especially if it was the campground attached to Hot-Water-Brewing... that is a business model I very much want to support, and spawn copy-cats.

@Billy-Tell Good to hear you got in okay. His flight was delayed for 48 hours, which is for the best.

We are some of the lucky ones, a few tree branches down, no actual damage, and our power has just returned (in the end, only about 40 hours out of last 72) few gusts of wind still about but things calmed massively.

I was at work this morning and there was a very eerie lack of contact from clients, I expect that flood of calls will come as things start to return to normal.

Some of the images/video of the destruction around the North island is heart breaking.

HIKURANGI Swamp flooded, again...usually no water there but it was a swamp so always susceptible to flooding

Swampland is the natural soak hole that is needed. Too much wetland and swamp has been drained or filled which doesn’t help in times like this. I’m no scientist but I guess your area is lucky to have that swamp.

More towns flooded in Hawke's Bay, including parts of Wairoa; more places evacuated, including Waipawa. More bridges damaged.

This must be an early, leading contender for "The Lucky Mariner 2023 Award"

That is a very, very ugly sea. That rescue is an outstanding achiivement by the crew of HMNZS Te Kaha with support from the Northland Rescue helicopter.

NEWS šŸ“¢ A man on a catamaran in distress has been rescued and is safe on board Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Mana.

The man was rescued by personnel on a small boat (RHIB) launched from Te Mana, while crew on a Northland Rescue Helicopter provided overwatch for the safety of all involved.

Maritime Component Commander Commodore Garin Golding said sea conditions had been challenging and everyone involved was pleased the person was now safe on board the ship.
