All over. Finn "Dan Carter" Russell not having his best game, but not helped by Scottish forwards getting absolutely dominated.
Showed today he’s not a Test player
Well, aside from 50 odd caps for Scotland, two Lions tours and generally being lauded as the most creative 10 in the UK you’re definitely right.
International player who blows very hot & very cold.
That’s not a Test player in my book.
Spencer v Mehrtens springs to mind.
So if you have an off game you’re not a test player ?

That’s one Lions tour where he played less than 30 minutes of test rugby and one where he was a convenient geographically related midweek cover. Let’s not polish his CV too much.

Are you sure lauded is the right word?

Let me rephrase:
When you write "lauded as the most creative 10 in the UK" I politely enquire if that is saying very much.

Oh for sure but I think an apt description of him and his style of play is “mercurial”…..a bit like Spencer as you mentioned, Quade Cooper and his coach Gregor Townsend. I don’t think you can really label him “not a test player” as just the week before he orchestrated a very good win over Australia.
He also does extremely well for someone built like a pro soccer player.

South Africa well on the way to cementing their No 1 World Ranking, a win over England (#3) would put them right back to post RWC level highs. Gawd knows what hapened vs Oz, but they are a team that knows how to win
The way the Boks play generally leaves them susceptible to teams like Oz and NZ that can create mismatches and take risks rather than try to grind them down.
They are a v good team who are comfortable with their gameplan. 4 losses for the year against Lions, Oz (x2), NZ puts them towards the front of a pack of teams, but not ahead by any stretch of the imagination. Lose to England (which I don't think they will) and that will be a played 13, lost 5 year...which is 62% win season. Win against England and it ends as a 70% win season.
ABs in their "worst season in years" are facing ending the season either with a played 15, lost 3 (80% win) record or played 15, lost 2 (86% win) record. We can remove the USA and Tonga games to make it more comparable.
I know some will add that it is the manner of the AB defeats that is the issue, but remember the ABs dispatched a decent (not great) Oz side 3 times. The same Oz that dispatched SA twice back to back.
The Ireland series next June really just shape up to be a cracker and a real benchmark for Foster's tenure. Lose a home test to Ireland and there will be screams. Lose the series and there will be blood in the streets!

There’s no doubting his talent and skills.
He may well be remembered as one of Scotland’s greats.

Shallow pool but yeah. Up there with Townsend, Chalmers and Rutherford.
