Taylor definitely but Santner ?????

Firstly, I said "hopes/dreams" of a win - not a dead certainty. :)

Secondly, Santner has a bit more about him as a bowler than Craig I reckon. Especially once the Aussies took to Craig at the Gabba, they've never played against him with any respect, and Craig hasn't been able to do anything to change that.

To be fair, I also wasn't expecting our wicket taking options to rely on the third change bowler bowling short stuff.

Outclassed. Bugger.
-

BCs have struggled with bat and ball really

When that happens you're likely to lose.

I get the feeling that Santner gets more love on this forum than he deserves. Not saying he 's not gonna develop into a very good player but he's hardly "got the runs on the board" so to speak.
-

you only have to be better than the alternatives.
-

That's particularly pertinent especially when discussing BC spinners but we went into the first test with a spinner and got hammered but went into this with four seamers and look to be on the way to a sound beating. He's hardly the messiah.
-

Who said he was... Have you been refining your knee jerking over at stuff nation? :)

To beat the Strayans every last ounce of 'getting it right' has to be found from somewhere.
-

You seemed to imply it to me when you put him in the same bracket as Taylor.
-

"My outside hopes/dreams of a series win were toast once Taylor and Santner were ruled out."

(i.e. even with them). Taylor = world class. Santner = better than the alternatives + that dreaded "potential" tag.

I crapped on about 9/52 and 188 in the Tests before Christmas, but we needed a few performances along those lines.
-

I didn't break down every individual word I guess, just not sure how a guy with a first class bowling average of 52 deserves a mention but I may be proven wrong.

Henry is a pretty handy batsman but I think he has the Mark Craig touch of a lot of not outs. I think Southee has the most talent but the least application.

As others have mentioned of more concern is his bowling.
-

I've been a slack bastard at following the domestic cricket this season. Anyone standing out as a decent opener in the four dayers? (he asks with hope)

Well, Jeet Raval scored a double ton against Otago in this current round. But his last ten scores before that were all under 30, so...

Ben Smith is getting a bit of chat. The cricketer, not the rugby player. The All Black rugby player, of course, not the shitty Otago/BOP clothing label guy. But we're not talking about them anyway.
-

holy fuck, do you type shit out just to "hear" yourself? It was explained to you above why we thought he might have made a difference. You've ignored it and basically gone down the "he's not Warne, so who cares" path.

His average makes fuck all difference when the reason given was i thought he would be able to bowl economically and create wickets through pressure, something almost all our bowlers have failed to do this summer, most especially Craig.
-

The incumbent test spinner didn't deserve a mention? The incumbent spinner who the current coach & selectors still dropped Mark Craig for - even with his first class bowling average of 52.

I recall people mentioning that about Southee too...
-

If the tail can somehow scrap their way through the rest of the day, the lead would be what - about 230-250 something like that?

Could be a tricky chase on day 5 if our bowlers manage to get it right.

That is a couple of very big IF's involved in my moment of optimism.
-

Stop getting all internet tough guy when someone disagrees with you Noodle arms....all I'm pointing out is that he's unproven. Not only that he's gone for over 6 an over in ODIs. Less in tests obviously but three matches isn't much to gauge is it ?

He might have made a difference, but I think Taylors record indicates he was more likely to.
-
