In this instance Henry. Otherwise Craig or Santner.

While Southee can score runs faster, I reckon Boult could occupy the crease longer...

Though Southee's batting is far less relevant than his apparent inconsistency with the ball these days. Did someone mention the idea of Wasim or Waqar helping out with the bowlers?

My outside hopes/dreams of a series win were toast once Taylor and Santner were ruled out. Shame it wasn't a winning note for McCullum to retire on too.

I suppose with Southee it depends on the situation, in this case yeah you're right more of a grafter would have been a better bet but it's rearranging deck chairs on the titanic or whatever that cliché is.....

Home and away, the Aussies have dominated the play. We've had moments and sure there may be a couple of highlights with Taylor's double and Baz's world record, but that quickly fades when you lose the match/series.

Whereas a test like Bellerive 2011 and the team bowling and fielding display in the first innings and Bracewell's match winning spell will be and are more memorable.

neither would have changed the result given the performance of everyone else. But i get the feeling Santner is already a better spinner than our other options, and at least seems to be able to bowl dot balls if required. Can bat a bit too.

Southee at 8 is a joke. Southee in the team at all is starting to look shakey.

Firstly, I said "hopes/dreams" of a win - not a dead certainty. :)

Secondly, Santner has a bit more about him as a bowler than Craig I reckon. Especially once the Aussies took to Craig at the Gabba, they've never played against him with any respect, and Craig hasn't been able to do anything to change that.

To be fair, I also wasn't expecting our wicket taking options to rely on the third change bowler bowling short stuff.

Outclassed. Bugger.

When that happens you're likely to lose.

I get the feeling that Santner gets more love on this forum than he deserves. Not saying he 's not gonna develop into a very good player but he's hardly "got the runs on the board" so to speak.

Henry hanging around so far on 12 off 21... and showing exactly why I just about drove off the road when I heard the commentators say Southee was walking in ahead of him on Saturday.

That's particularly pertinent especially when discussing BC spinners but we went into the first test with a spinner and got hammered but went into this with four seamers and look to be on the way to a sound beating. He's hardly the messiah.

I've been a slack bastard at following the domestic cricket this season. Anyone standing out as a decent opener in the four dayers? (he asks with hope)

To beat the Strayans every last ounce of 'getting it right' has to be found from somewhere.

You seemed to imply it to me when you put him in the same bracket as Taylor.

Henry is currently averaging 30. It shouldn't even need a discussion.

(i.e. even with them). Taylor = world class. Santner = better than the alternatives + that dreaded "potential" tag.

I crapped on about 9/52 and 188 in the Tests before Christmas, but we needed a few performances along those lines.
