@Stargazer Wishful thinking as a Hawke's Bay fan.
Savea will be picked if in decent form so it's between NMS and Dagg for the no.14 jersey. NMS has only ever played on the right wing for the ABs.
"in decent form" being the operative words. Savea hasn't had that form for a long time. Naholo hasn't been convincing either.
One thing is clear, with Jordie also in the mix, Dmac will probably get few chances in black.
Don't want to keep White Knighting Savea but his form in black has been fine. He ripped the Wallabies a new one at Eden Park to ensure we took the record consecutive test wins when they were seriously pushing us that game - or have you forgotten that already?
Canes fans can feel a bit aggrieved at his form in 2015, but other then that he's been pretty solid. 'Solid' isn't good enough for Savea detractors though, if he's not playing like Lomu reincarnated then he should be dropped.
There's also the obvious point that the AB selectors want at least one strong ball runner in their back three to compliment two fullbacks, so he's really competing with Naholo who has been inconsistent at best in black.
Savea was poor for most of 2015 and 2016 with a few good games thrown in. I think he only kept his place because of NMS being injured and Naholo hasn't looked too great either. The thing about Savea is that he has to be in beast mode. The other aspects of his game like his ability under the high ball and his defence really haven't developed enough over the past two seasons. He is only in the team as an attacking threat. A solid Savea simply isn't good enough.
Savea wasn't brilliant at Eden Park. He scored one try after a kick chase which I would expect most wingers to score. His second try was good as was his work for the Coles try but we were 15 points up by that stage. That was probably Savea's best game last season as well.
Nonsense, Savea was brilliant at Eden Park. He made numerous breaks to get us on the front foot, finished the kick chase try brilliantly, created and finished another try, and set up Coles for another. There have been very few players in rugby's history that could do what he did that day. Without him that game is squeaky bum right to the end, but he single-handedly blew it apart Lomu style. I'm astonished you can watch that and say he wasn't brilliant.
I think your post is a great example of the outrageously high benchmark people rate Savea by compared to other players.
-
was when Hansen made the comparison between Savea and Lomu, Savea was outstanding in most areas of his game, attack, defence, even in the air, but he has failed to reach those heights again, and I think this is what people keep comparing (or expecting) week in week out...similarly when DC wasn't there, it was panic stations cos, well DC wasn't there and no one was close to DC.
Savea has been far form his best (when his peak was exceptional) but he's still a good winger at International level, problem is, we expect more. Hopefully him turning up to Super rugby in top shape is a sign he is mentally right now, as opposed to the over weight Savea of the past 2 seasons.

The benchmark for Savea is Savea, just like when other player's form dips they're rated against their previous form.

I'm really sorry that Julian ran over your cat but you're going to have to forgive him one day Nepia...

But in seriousness, that's absurd. Just because he hasn't been quite as effective as he was in previous seasons, doesn't mean he should be dropped - he's still significantly better then the other options. Or shall we renew calls for Lowe to be given a run? Because he's not flaky at all!
Honestly, by that logic nearly everyone in the ABs would be dropped. Your boy Kaino would not have played since 2011, Read would have been dropped a few seasons ago, in fact the only constants would have been McCaw and probably BBBR/Whitelock. The rest have had ups and downs in form like any pro athlete. Why the constant calls to drop Savea when there's nobody ready and waiting in the wings? He's done more then enough to warrant his spot.
-
@No-Quarter were plenty of calls for McCaw to be dropped at various times in his career.

He's no longer fast enough to catch my cat.
I like pre 2015 Julian, I just don't have to pretend the 2015-2016 version is as good.
From the report from Boyd it sounds like he's training up a storm so you lot may be able to put the horse in the stable and leave the shield and that pole thing in the shed this season.

NEW SUPER RUGBY JUDICIARY PROCESS UNVEILED
SANZAAR has today confirmed a new and updated judicial process that will be implemented for Super Rugby 2017. Rugbyâs governing body, World Rugby, has endorsed the process and SANZAAR believes it represents an enhancement to an important part of the tournament that will provide improved consistency and efficient decision-making.⨠⨠The changes to the SANZAAR Judicial Rules for 2017 include:⨠Permitting an incident to be referred back to the Citing Commissioner for review if new evidence becomes available outside the existing allowable time frame for determination.⨠The introduction of a three-person Foul Play Review Committee⨠The exclusion of the regular season bye rounds in any sanction⨠The ability of Judicial Committees to issue a warning for foul play offences that in their opinion do not quite meet the âRed Cardâ threshold.
Central to the amendments in 2017 is the formation of the Foul Play Review Committee. The committee will be comprised of a consistent panel of three members who in the first instance will review all incidents of red cards, Citing Commissioner referrals and misconduct, and make a determination based on the information before them. The committee will meet at a fixed time to be determined at the conclusion of each round and the infringing player will have the ability to accept the decision of the committee or have the right to be heard at a formal judicial hearing within the following 24 hours.⨠⨠SANZAAR has appointed senior Judicial Officer Nigel Hampton QC (New Zealand) to chair the committee and he will be assisted by former Super Rugby and international players, John Langford (Australia) and Stefan Terblanche (South Africa).⨠⨠In the determination of an incident and the handing down of any sanctions, the committee will now have the ability to exclude any regular season Super Rugby byes as part of a meaningful sanction. This is a significant change and will ensure all sanctions issued during Super Rugby are treated consistently across all teams.⨠â¨
Commenting on the new judicial process SANZAAR CEO Andy Marinos said, âThe new process is the result of the identification of certain challenges within the application of an effective and consistent judicial process. It has followed a comprehensive review of Super Rugby 2016 and a consultation process with the Four National Unions (ARU, NZR, SARU and UAR). The changes also follow World Rugbyâs acceptance, following a Judicial Review Conference last year, that competition organisers be allowed to tailor judicial processes to suit the challenges associated within their competitions.â⨠⨠âSANZAAR believes Super Rugby has unique challenges across six territories and 15 time zones and the enhanced Super Rugby judicial process will deliver a more streamlined and effective system for teams and a more consistent outcome for players and fans to identify with.â⨠⨠For a summary flow chart of the SANZAAR Judiciary Process CLICK HERE⨠The Tournament will also be played under World Rugbyâs 2017 Law Trials and the head contact law revisions.

Facundo Isa has signed with Toulon for at least two seasons from 2017-18. He has already been part of the French club during the 2013-14 season at the age of 20, when he played only one game for them.
Big loss for the Jaguares (and, possibly, the Pumas?), who IMO will be losing one of their best players.

I only know what's written in this article; haven't see anything official from the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR), the Pumas or Jaguares yet:
The move means that Isa will not be considered for Los Jaguares in Super Rugby, with the UAR staying consistent with their policy of not selecting European-based players. Third-choice hooker Facundo Bosch was also removed from the Jaguares squad after signing for Agen.
More importantly for Argentina fans, barring a drastic change in policy Isa will now be unavailable for Pumas selection for the duration of his contract. It has been reported that Isa held talks with the UAR in an effort to change their stance, but that looks unlikely to change in the immediate future. Should the policy remain unchanged, there remains a glimmer of hope that Isa could return in time for the 2019 World Cup, with his contract ending in June of that year.

Thanks @Stargazer
For some reason I thought I had heard he wasn't available at the very start of this season, but cant find anything to back that up.

He was blocked from training with he Jaguares when the news about a possible signing with Toulon emerged. It's in this article which confuses Toulon and Toulouse:

Unfortunately super rugby is no longer where it's at. At least outside the nz teams.
Isa, Imhof, Ayerza, Figallo.
