@Stargazer Wishful thinking as a Hawke's Bay fan.
Savea will be picked if in decent form so it's between NMS and Dagg for the no.14 jersey. NMS has only ever played on the right wing for the ABs.
"in decent form" being the operative words. Savea hasn't had that form for a long time. Naholo hasn't been convincing either.
One thing is clear, with Jordie also in the mix, Dmac will probably get few chances in black.
Don't want to keep White Knighting Savea but his form in black has been fine. He ripped the Wallabies a new one at Eden Park to ensure we took the record consecutive test wins when they were seriously pushing us that game - or have you forgotten that already?
Canes fans can feel a bit aggrieved at his form in 2015, but other then that he's been pretty solid. 'Solid' isn't good enough for Savea detractors though, if he's not playing like Lomu reincarnated then he should be dropped.
There's also the obvious point that the AB selectors want at least one strong ball runner in their back three to compliment two fullbacks, so he's really competing with Naholo who has been inconsistent at best in black.
Quoted so it gets reiterated.

Kieran Read close to re-signing. Not really a surprise, of course, but still great to have the skip in NZ for a few more years.
"I'll be staying through the next World Cup and all going well I'll get that signed off soon. There's are a different options within your contract and things just needs to be sorted out."
Also interesting what he says about his wrist injury.

To be honest no one will want to be the first modern AB captain (or maybe first ever) to walk out on the job when the selectors still want them.

Savea was poor for most of 2015 and 2016 with a few good games thrown in. I think he only kept his place because of NMS being injured and Naholo hasn't looked too great either. The thing about Savea is that he has to be in beast mode. The other aspects of his game like his ability under the high ball and his defence really haven't developed enough over the past two seasons. He is only in the team as an attacking threat. A solid Savea simply isn't good enough.
Savea wasn't brilliant at Eden Park. He scored one try after a kick chase which I would expect most wingers to score. His second try was good as was his work for the Coles try but we were 15 points up by that stage. That was probably Savea's best game last season as well.

Savea is not too far of howletts try record I think. Something must be going right...

Nonsense, Savea was brilliant at Eden Park. He made numerous breaks to get us on the front foot, finished the kick chase try brilliantly, created and finished another try, and set up Coles for another. There have been very few players in rugby's history that could do what he did that day. Without him that game is squeaky bum right to the end, but he single-handedly blew it apart Lomu style. I'm astonished you can watch that and say he wasn't brilliant.
I think your post is a great example of the outrageously high benchmark people rate Savea by compared to other players.
-
was when Hansen made the comparison between Savea and Lomu, Savea was outstanding in most areas of his game, attack, defence, even in the air, but he has failed to reach those heights again, and I think this is what people keep comparing (or expecting) week in week out...similarly when DC wasn't there, it was panic stations cos, well DC wasn't there and no one was close to DC.
Savea has been far form his best (when his peak was exceptional) but he's still a good winger at International level, problem is, we expect more. Hopefully him turning up to Super rugby in top shape is a sign he is mentally right now, as opposed to the over weight Savea of the past 2 seasons.

The benchmark for Savea is Savea, just like when other player's form dips they're rated against their previous form.

I'm really sorry that Julian ran over your cat but you're going to have to forgive him one day Nepia...

But in seriousness, that's absurd. Just because he hasn't been quite as effective as he was in previous seasons, doesn't mean he should be dropped - he's still significantly better then the other options. Or shall we renew calls for Lowe to be given a run? Because he's not flaky at all!
Honestly, by that logic nearly everyone in the ABs would be dropped. Your boy Kaino would not have played since 2011, Read would have been dropped a few seasons ago, in fact the only constants would have been McCaw and probably BBBR/Whitelock. The rest have had ups and downs in form like any pro athlete. Why the constant calls to drop Savea when there's nobody ready and waiting in the wings? He's done more then enough to warrant his spot.
-
@No-Quarter were plenty of calls for McCaw to be dropped at various times in his career.

He's no longer fast enough to catch my cat.
I like pre 2015 Julian, I just don't have to pretend the 2015-2016 version is as good.
From the report from Boyd it sounds like he's training up a storm so you lot may be able to put the horse in the stable and leave the shield and that pole thing in the shed this season.
