I didn't read the game thread in real time. But post game I haven't really heard much talk about the ref. As it should be. I thought he had a decent game, of course the attitude of both teams probably made his day easier
Give it a few hours for the Welsh to wake up!

When Havili got charged down, he received a slow, loopy pass from Perenara, and had to adjust positioning a little. Should not have gotten caught out though.
Yeah the speed of TJP's passing, or lack of it, stuffed up BB as well who would then give Havili hospital passes.
Weber may have been passing to other backs or back to forwards but there didn't seem to be an issue getting the ball out or hospital passes in his 20 or so minutes.I know he is often maligned, with good reason. But in general I thought TJ passed better in this game, his passes were better located and better timed for the most part
On a slight tangent. Noticed an interesting defensive tactic with TJ starting way behind the defensive line and shooting up ahead into the midfield.
I get sending a shooter up but hadn't noticed said player starting so far back and timing his run like that.
TJ or someone else, worked well

Yes, this seemed like a tactic, instead of the 9 being a sweeper he was more employed to put pressure on the receiver, if he misses then not that much drama as the defensive line hasn't changed. Guess it just tests the fitness of that player as they are doing a lot of extra running.

@tim problem is once you are committed to a tackle, your head is off to the side, thier guy ducks his head on your peripheral and you are a split second too late adjusting, bye.
So many of these are split second instances and the rules in some cases do not allow for how physically dynamic rugby is.

Will write more tomorrow but great to be back watching Test rugby.
And this will rankle with the majority on here, but if he stays fit Blackadder could become an AB all time great
I agree, I a real fan, just thought last night he and Papali'i were both not quite 7s or 6s, but no reason we can't develop it and play the game to suit.

Agreed. Both are absolute toilers. Very high work rates.

Perfect game for that type of player because the Welsh did a good job of keeping ball in hand and tried to run it up a lot, the D line was kept busy

Akira has lost his starting 6 position me thinks.
Nowhere near as busy as Blackadder - who seems almost hyperactive.Busy without being very effective. Something like 7 tackles and two misses. Akira had stats like that a few games again and got slammed on here.
We were playing with three sevens out there, although Dalton is a big seven. Won’t work against better sides.
It was also notable when ST came on we started making gains in close, we need more players like that and if you a thing against Akira then Jacobson can also do it.
Blackadder has a good future ahead, but at seven.
Would you agree Blackadder played better against the Boks than Akira did?

ESPN has Blackadder with 14 made, 1 missed, 2 turnovers.
Paps would probably top that as he was taken off with 12 made, no misses, 1 turnover.
I thought they did well as a team actually.
Espn has Akira with 0 tackles and 0 metres made despite the fact even Nisbett noticed him make a tackle that resulted in a turnover to the ABs.
So not sure of the accuracy of those stats.
And made a really good run wide out on the right.

At seven he was very busy, made quite a few mistakes though that were covered in that thread.
Had a great work rate.

@nzzp I think the tackle situation might become like the high ball - if you’re not in position to make a legal tackle then you pull out, or change angle to tackle the player from the side or behind.
I’d be worried about ball runners taking advantage by leading with the head.
Ref got it correct in being a major mitigation. As for the no arms part, very hard to tell if there was no intention to wrap or the tacklers instinctively didn’t sing the arm into the head.

Reece's try was gold. One of the best of the season.
Amazing. He touched the ball 3 times in the movement. The speed with which he passed and got hit, then got back up in support was brilliant. Jordan's solo effort was also very well taken
Jordan must have been watching old clips of Dougie Howlett.
Maybe, but that was out of the Jeff Wilson playbook for sure.
I was picturing this one

@nepia The match stats on the website of the Welsh Rugby Union confirm ESPN's tackle stats.
So everyone is getting their stats wrong then?

Also agree but also Ardie isn't quite a traditional 8. Maybe it is not a problem if they complement each other. Would have thought we might suffer in the lineouts (with a not-so-tall 8 or 6) but the locks played well and therefore so did the lineouts.

The lack of talk about the ref must mean he did a pretty good job. I appreciated his calm demeanour and just the way he went about it. TMO seemed intent on getting involved and it appeared the ref was a little annoyed at him. A few calls went our way for sure but overall I felt he was fair and let the game flow.
Most UK fans (not just Welsh) are furious with the ref.

Are they used to the TMO having more say? I know in the few Premiership games I have watched The TMO is constantly in the refs ear and they seem to make decisions together.
