Very shrewd guy, huge rugby brain, I rate him ... but not as AB head coach in a million years!

I don't think there's a better rugby brain in the game, or that I've seen one since Wayne Smith.

Stylistically he's one-man band. Wrecking ball with his coaching team who are either discarded or have had enough after 2 years or so. Plus I don't see any evidence he believes much in player development at international level ... wants the finished article for his gameplan now assesses players through "deep-ending". So lots of fringe players and up-and-coming talent get brutally cut short and never re-considered.

He'd get results as AB Head Coach no doubt! Not convinced he'd leave them in a better place than he found them though.

Lots of chatter over here including coaches who have previously publically disavowed any interest in the England role or (like Pat Lam) are on long-term stable deals.

Assuming an Englishmen the name making sense is Steve Borthwick, Head Coach of Leicester Tigers. Part of the England setup from 2015-2019, from memory, line-out then forwards coach.Joined Leicester, then was promoted to Head Coach.

Borthwick, with Cockerill staying on as forwards coach I could see happening.

Would be great if we can knock them out of the RWC. Give him a good going away present.

Hopefully a 50+ to nil thrashing that will haunt him forever. Hate his smugness.

Our old friend, Eddie Jones, has been upsetting UK tennis fans with some remarks he made about Emma Raducanu.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/59206538

Storm in teacup stuff. Marcus Smith's agents will be delighted that he has been mentioned in print many times in the last 24 hours in the same sentence as Emma Raducanu.

Emma R may go a long time before she makes another slam semi. The combination of Covid/draw and unusually fast Flushing Meadow courts was perfect for her. UK press is treating her as if she's already in top 10.

I thought Eddie was on the money.

Eddie's points were good points well made.

Hasn't stopped him being called sexist though by the wokerati.

@pakman I think it is the fact Eddie Jones called her "that girl" which has upset some people more than anything else. He entitled to his opinions and to manage his players as he judges correct.

Very hard indeed IMHO to criticise Emma Raducanu for trying to make more than a few quid on the back of her US Open win to be honest. At the very least she will have helped her parents pay off their mortgage. Be interesting to see how she goes at the Grand Slams next year which will be her performance priority rather than the smaller tournaments she's been playing at since.

@sparky No problem banking some money -- she probably owes quite a bit. But danger when photo ops get in the way of four hours a day practice.

@pakman Have you got evidence that's the guess? From what I gather her work ethic is basically off the scale.

The LTA have put this statement out on her behalf:

No evidence. But that's the type of distraction Eddie was referring to.

Anna Kournikova/Ana Ivanovic/Martina Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard are famous examples of historic underperformance after very strong starts.

Some B-List tennis feminist lambasted Jones for suggesting Radacunu's off-court activities were having a impact on her performance and claiming "that sort of thing is never said about male sportsmen". Which is bloody funny when Jones was making exactly the same point about Marcus Smith

Okay, Eddie Jones criticised Emma Raducanu for doing a Vogue cover shoot which she actually did before winning the US Open without dropping a single set as a qualifier which rather undermines his argument.....

    Keep 'em coming, Eddie.

Eddie just wants to be popular. Then he too could be in vogue.

Stupid comment by Jones. Valid point to make about Smith needing to avoid distractions, but really dumb way to do it.

    Just Eddie being Eddie.

If Marcus Smith doesn't get a photoshoot in the coming weeks, Vogue needs to be cancelled for sexism.

    (I'll get my coat...)

That's such a stupid and false statement. They've been saying exactly that about male sportsmen since endorsements and photoshoots became a thing.

It's a reflection on the way society is these days. The point Jones was trying to make was obvious and he clearly wasn't out to offend anyone but that's ignored because someone hasn't been outraged about something for 5 seconds.

As for him as coach, I reckon he must have mellowed since his heart attack. I'm not sure the early 2000s Jones would still be coaching England.
