I should add that I've never been Quade's biggest fan - but have a grudging respect for him based on a couple of interactions during our ill-fated dive into a National Rugby Championship.

I think this move by Rennie is more to protect Lolesio from the Boks than anything.

Hodge might have been the simpler option at 10.

Would probably limit the Wallabies to a form of attack that the Boks would love tho, so perhaps it is a double-negative.

What Argentina and the Lions lacked was movement around and off the ball to create uncertainty for the Bok defense. Wallabies need to have a bit of subtlety and a shitload of support, because they don't have the pace to outrun them after any line breaks.

The Quade hate thing was somewhat amusing but probably deserved after the knee to Richie McCaw's head.

Tho in your collective role as Stoic Custodians Of The Game, you carried on with the booing long after it was probably necessary 🙂

After the whole "he doesn't defend in the front line!" got going, nobody appeared to have an issue with every other 10 doing the same once the value of counterattack opportunities was understood.

So it is a mixed bag.

For me the booing sort of ended up like calling out beeeeeeeaaaast, just the thing you do (yes kiwis did that in NZ). For most it was not malicious, just banter. Call yourself NZ rugby public enemy no 1, then you can't whine when you get treated like it.

If you recall he was actually named Public Enemy No. 2, behind ...

... (Not at that stage Sir) Graham Henry.

We know where the line is.

The knee was the spark, but it continued because it had an effect on him

I think players expect a bit of shit to come their way and any supposed effect the booing had on Quade was more in the minds of the people doing it, based on whether he ended up playing well. More about his lack of consistency than any external factors. And if the rest of the Wallabies were putting in a poor performance, these things get exacerbated.

I seem to remember a game in Dunedin where he was playing and kicking pretty well despite the booing, and even some Kiwis were rolling their eyes at the crowd behaviour. We still lost, mind.

Home crowd shenanigans aren’t unique to us.

Prefer Ireland's method of dealing with the kicker - dead silence. Is it respectful? Is it off-putting? Could be both.

The times I was at the ground the booing always ended in laughter when directed at Quade, because we all knew it was part of the entertainment.

I dislike Ireland’s method because they’re so fucking smug and moral about it - and it’s a tactic now because they know it unnerves some players. In the vids thread we’ve had the Good, The Bad, and the Rugby pop up and the abuse from Irish spectators in that is off the charts nasty.

Quade appeared to relish his bad boy persona, and that just added to the theatre for the crowd

He tried to, but think it really didn't work for him.

Simple psychology😁 There is a "Quade" at every school or workplace in NZ. We know him well. He is that spoon you had to put up with or that part of your personality you don't like. He represented the quintessential NZ dork.
When he stepped over the mark, we all collectively went, "fucken knobhead!" because he, rightly or wrongly, represented this.

Agreed. His problem was he said it didn't bother him, but based on his performances it clearly did. He definitely miscalculated that one

It seemed to have an effect, he was on top of his game (2011 Reds Super), and he created magic on the field. If you think booing had an effect, you keep doing it.

True colours came out when he copped a knee injury in the 3/4 playoff at the RWC though - he got the full applause ovation off the field. It's cartoonish - like Tom Brady playing the 'heel' - but it wasn't representing genuine dislike

@nta Because Dane Coles seems like a top bloke after the game. Competitive,...yes... kind of like George Gregan!

Intensely curious as to how Quade goes. This will honestly be one the strangest selections IMHO.
