In terms of the playing group, expect a largely unchanged roster to be reassembled. Two months ago Collins told Stuff around 30 of their 38-man squad for 2022 had already been locked in.
Old article but I'm just googling stuff for a smidge of info. Didn't realise this many were locked in already.
-
@yeetyaah It's hard to know who is contracted, and who isn't as not all of that info is released. Obviously, L Boshier and TTT have to be replaced, maybe Harris too. There are a few other players whose contract is up for renewal (Brown, Karpik, McWhannell, Parker) and then the DMac question.
-
Only a 1 yr deal, so probably DMac's replacement.

I'm not overly excited but we do need a fill in for DMac and the existing options aren't that good.
Given how quickly this was announced you have to wonder if he was approached or was looking.
Obviously burned his bridges with Tony Brown big time and knew it.
Here's hoping that was a kick in the arse and he will use this season to showcase himself for further work.On another note have we found away for Gatland to get lost in the MIQ system?

Ioane's signing means that Trask will continue to be used more as a fullback than a 1st 5. That's where he has played most often in recent seasons for BOP and the Maori. I'm in two minds about this because I would like to see ENS and Stevenson given a chance there. I'm also not sure what this means for Rivez Reihana, and whether he has been re-signed.
For Ioane, he will either sign for another team in 2023 (NZ franchise or MP) or head overseas.

I thought in an earlier post or another thread it was determined he was signed for 2022...I really like the look of him though, hopefully Northland dont damage him!

Also insurance for when DMac's initial 12 months is up. He hasn't confirmed a return to the Chiefs (or even NZ).
It would be a surprise but maybe the stint overseas is also a way to break ties. Returning to a Gatland coached side may not be attractive to him but playing under Tony Brown in a covered stadium could be. -

I haven't read any info about the length of Reihana's contract, other than when the Chiefs 2021 squad was announced. @Stargazer might know.
I rate him too.
-
@bovidae Sorry, I've no idea about Reihana.
Interesting is that Tiaan Falcon only has one more year on his Toyota Verblitz contract. Not sure he'd want to get back to the Chiefs if Gatland is still the coach though, but he may be available again after next season.

I am a bit disappointed by this. Where does that leave Reihana? Would have preferred local talent like Fletcher Smith or Orbyn Leger to cover the absence of DMac next year - and give Reihana some time along the way.
I certainly hope the Chiefs bring an improvement in Josh's discipline off the field. He has talent on it - but needs consistency - and I suspect improvements off the field can help. Bit of a risk by Chiefs though, especially when it is a line-breaking winger that they need most.
Is there word on the 3rd halfback? Is it Nock? Was hoping they might get Luke Campbell back if Hurricanes released him, or Cortez Ratima.
-
I would hope that Reihana will get some time this year off the bench, and as a one-year contract it shouldn’t be such as to push Reihana to leave. I do agree that we need some better wingers, but we still have Naholo on the books, right? If he can bring some form to the next level, we could be in much better shape than I thought we would be.

The Northlanders will have to answer this. But with Weber staying Nock would now be competing with Roe as his backup. His signing would have made sense to provide experience if Weber went overseas. Now, I'm not so sure. That said, having depth in such a vital position is important and we could sign Ratima to a WTG contract.

@bovidae AFAIK Nock as another year to run on his Blues contract.
Although that doesn't mean a lot nowadays as contracts are regularly cut short.
