Only thing I can say about ref is that, in the viewpoint I could see, ref was obscuring view of contact between front rows, and Williams was right there, so may have seen something else.
But long after the ball had gone back through scrum. That is something else I had considered - maybe he's seeing something on Slipper's side that caused him to think it was moving.
The slight upward bobble of Tupou is caused by Karl feeling Taylor collapse and trying to stay up IMHO. But as soon as he tries to drive he's overextended.

I'm not going to read right through the thread but has it been mentioned about the ABs not looking to take advantage of the 50/22?
At HT when they talked to David Hill and posed the question he said that they thought the Wobs had more experience with it so they just decided to play what was in front of them.
I find that quite astounding. There is a trial rule that you can use to great advantage and you don't even look to use it? It isn't just the aspect of possibly getting an attacking lineout, the rule opens up ground at the back because you need two players covering the sides a bit more than usual and if you can pull the fullback one way you get fertile ground to chip and chase into. -

Wind at your backs in the first half but spend most of the half trying to run it. Even more incentive this year to kick the corners and play the territory.

I'm reading a really terrible novel at the moment, where I just can't suspend my disbelief as the terrible dialogue and hopelessly naive spy-craft jerk me out of it constantly.
Watching the length of the field non-try from this match reminded me of this reading experience.
It's really good rugby if you ignore the 2 forward passes and the shepherd, like the on-field ref wanted to do. Groaningly bad otherwise.
I can't enjoy rugby where protecting the flow trumps the reality of shit skills and obeying actual rules.

On the disallowed try, it would be interesting if a team realised the presence of a missed forward pass or knock on and decided to take a tackle and reset instead of scoring a try.
It happened in the French series where the refs missed a relatively clear French knock-on before the ball was offloaded to the winger who scored a long-range try (subsequently called back for said knock-on). Had the last-ditch tackle attempt been successful then they may have scored a number of phases later with no issues, and the try would stand.
As far as missed forward passes go the Smith pass wasn't egregious, but weirdly once I saw it I was almost cheering for the ABs to score the try so we could come back for it.

@chris-b Fair enough. I don’t see Will Jordan is being a better wing than Rico. And I’m still OK with Rico developing as a center so wing small c.
To be honest, it doesn't have to be an either/or. There's room for both - and for Caleb Clarke as well.
Most of last season we had Jordie occupying a wing, which ended up doing no-one many favours.

I watched it a second time (amazing what one sees when not also on the Fern)..wow, Dalton P. really was in the thick of it, very effective tackling, so no wonder I never saw him, he was always at the bottom of the heap. And Akira looked solid, he and Dalton worked hard to stop some of their big boys. Would have been nice to see more turnovers though, arguably our loosies didn't work very well together and I thought I saw Ardie fumble at the back of a scrum.... We seem to have our locks attempt a lot of turnovers (more so than Australia?)
Smith was mostly top class as per usual (and he can pass the ball unlike the replacement Wallaby) but it was worrying to see BB, our second 10, the most experienced 10, come on and make bad decision after bad decision...
Australia were a different team in the last 8-10 minutes. I suspect it was mostly our loss of Smith and their experience coming off the bench but I was concerned their blue steel had such immediate impact and was it 12 points in the last 4 minutes?
In a telegraphed move that had Foster coaching genius written all over it (plan 2-3 master team plays a game, not teach them to how improvise and dominate) why was Ardie outside Rieko in the first half for that would-be team try down the sideline, shouldn't they have the specialist speedier 11 on the outside? I don't see them dropping Reece now, his workrate was great. Similar for DH, he made plenty of mistakes but had the most initiative in the backline.
If you don’t like JB at FB, it still seems open at 15. DMac so many skills, so many good things, but he doesn’t often build the team position (when he does, like the last game, it is magical but just not often enough) and still risks getting isolated. I was thinking back to Bender, how he always got the ball a few m forward and in a better position than when he caught it. Perhaps DMac gets paid by a shoe sponsor to run as many km sideways and backwards as possible. I also wonder if he has lost a bit of sting in his sidestep acceleration.
Another reason to watch again was to marvel at the shit ball ALB got and yet how often he tidied up for others. Perhaps not the offensive threat he normally is, but defensively was, if not the glue, then the vacuum cleaner.
Sam W had a good game but he looks tired. Are we overworking him? BBBR is really pushing the limit there, we could have had more penalties or even cards.
Subs: I do wonder if JB played particularly badly just to ensure he is not played out of position again. If I was a winger left out of the team I'd be fuming more than a hardcore fumigator.
I thought the overall kicking (apart from RM conversions/penalties etc) was poor from both sides. Lineouts, I was hoping they'd improve a little bit more, scratchy...

Interesting hearing Smith saying the team f***ed up and didn't play the plan that was worked on etc. I couldn't for the life of me understand why we didn't use the wind in first half and wonder if just maybe RMo struggles with playing that style of rugby? Your 10 at test level really has to be able to use the wind I think. I do actually think it was more a team thing ,they all got excited and spun it wide (very similar to Puma loss last year). Let's hope whole team just plays a bit smarter this week.

Smashed in the scrum not good by the subs
Bell monstered Ta’avao.
Having Matt Philip behind him helps. I've only just reached that point.
Having just rewatched it may be Ta'avao has been a bit hard done by. First scrum after Patty T on and Whitelock swaps sides. PT packed very high on Karl, and looks like Sam slipped off Ta'avao, who then has whole Wallaby pack driving through him.
Poor cohesion by Black pack, whereas Wallaby changes seem to have been upgrade.Ta'avao did Ok at previous scrum with Codie and BBBR still on, although scrum did collapse on his side.
