@nogusta If so its a slight risk as he only has a handful of first class games after losing a whole season last year with injury but I am glad they are going for the young (21) local player. He is also a big physical player so it would be a bit of like for like with Ruru style wise.

@nogusta correct , I got that confirmed yesterday, Ruru had been asking to be released from his Auckland contract at the beginning of the season .

I am surprised that the Blues are yet to confirm who the new Coach will be to replace Tana. It was a while ago that it was mentioned on here that Craig McGath was offered the job, but no news since.

Romano has signed as not wanted by crusaders. Kata signed with MP.
Segner signed for 3 times as much as crusaders offered. Better players in crusaders academy.

Agree I don't think Segner is ready for SR.

@chchfanatic Big call to make about unproven players. Segner has the tools, he just needs to add a bit of man strength to his game, and learning from one of the best 7s in the country Dalton Papali'i will help develop his game.

@african-monkey if he wasn’t German would he have all the hype. Guys like Dom Gardiner ,Fletcher Anderson , Corey Kellow , Joe Brial are just as good. You have to remember there is a salary cap in super rugby too.

@chchfanatic Yeah, I get where you're coming from, but I do see more upside to his game than your current 7s in the Crusaders starting lineup (not saying that he is better than them yet but I think he will end up being better than them). Can't comment on the younger brigade as I haven't seen enough of them.

In regards to him being German, well, he has had almost 2 full seasons in the Ta$man 23 and was part of their title winning side last season, so I wouldn't say that his nationality has a lot to do with his profile, although I do see the angle you are coming from with that one haha.

@african-monkey yeah I meant the story of a German kid trying to make abs. Not him being german. He’s good but the money he is being paid is he worth the salary cap space.

Think you will find Corey Kellow will be a much better 7 than Segner in the future.
Time will tell on Segner but I don't think he is a SR player by a long way as yet.

edit. Kellow also is a year younger than Segner.

Agreed. For me, Kellow looked like the best loose forward in the Crusaders U20 team this year.

@chris He may well be, I never disputed that at all.

I just think the Segner signing is getting played down a bit when personally, I think it could be a good investment for the Blues. As @chchfanatic alluded to, the Crusaders couldn't match the offer and have plenty of 7s coming through so it may not be a huge loss for them, but it could still prove to be a very good signing for the Blues going forward. We've produced a lot of good loosies ourselves and our recruitment of late has been very very good so yeah, I don't see why we can't get the best out of Segner.

The Blues coaches will need to decide what Segner's best position is in the long-term. He has played in all 3 loose forward positions in different teams over the last 2 years.
