We got back into the match through our flair, then the Crusaders slowed the game down taking complete control in the set pieces, lost count how many bloody tries they scored driving over the line from lineouts inside our 22... our forward play has to be much better than the rubbish we showed tonight.
you blokes showed enough I reckon,I am glad we got you out of the way early at least for the First one.
I have a feeling you might give the Blues a run next week. The Blues are behind the ball with match fitness ( nothing beats match fitness you can train all you like but it doesn't match playing)
Jordie Ardie and Amua will be better for the game time.Yeah, we did some good stuff, but the ongoing problem with our set pieces is a real worry, your team smashed us there, we scored some late tries to make the scoreboard look better, but we'd lost the match well before that... we should have the edge on the Blues with us having played a match, true, you can't simulate match practice.
All the players were going to be a bit rusty in their first game, but thought Ardie was outstanding.
Thought your 10 Burke had a top match, liked that when he was ever inside his 22 he would kick the ball out near halfway so you could go to a lineout & set your defence... when our 10 was inside his 22 he kicked aimlessly downfield allowing your blokes to attack from broken play, from one of those silly kicks your blokes managed to score a try.
Yep totally agree with your post.Your boys need to improve that set piece .agree about
Burke, he was really good. How old is Burke ? ...our 10 Ruben Love is only 21, he's a brilliant running 10, has plenty of gas, but as you've seen he needs to work a lot on his general kicking game to guide the team around the field.
He also needs a bit of work on his defence, he's got good size for a 10 but I saw him get bumped off quite a few times yesterday (same thing happened in the NPC from memory too).
He definitely outplayed Love though. Love I think would suit a bench impact role at this stage with his broken field running.
Agree about Burke's defence. Very early days for him, but he does not seem to have too much of a running game so he will need to be outstanding at controlling a game and be a very reliable goal kicker. His kicking from hand seemed a bit short yesterday, but that seems a common problem with NZ 10s at the moment. OK as a back up 10 for now, but the Crusaders will have problems if RM goes down long term.
Talking about kicking from hand - Hunt was getting school boy distance at best yesterday.
Yeah Burke has a running game he made a couple of half breaks. But would have been told to get the team around the park first and fore most.
We will see more of his running game as he gets more comfortable in the role, he is only 22 young for a First Five. You have obviously seen more of him than me. Is Burke quick or is his pace just serviceable? I know Goosen is no slouch and there are angles etc to consider but during my one and only viewing I thought he made Burke look pedestrian with that cover tackle.
Not Mounga or Barrett speed but good enough compared to other First Fives apart from the two mentioned.

@dice I like Coles. Probably the best tight forward to wear the Jersey. Cullen. Duh. Conrad and Ma'a are right there. But neither of them won a title and neither did Tana so Umaga edges it for me in terms of his mana and his leadership. Kerry was a collosus. Sentimental pick

Haven't opened the link yet but to me it's obviously Cullen, Collins, Umaga and C Smith.
Would love to have Lomu there but he played for 3 franchises whereas those named are Canes through and through (yes, Umaga had an end of career spell at the Chiefs well after finishing with the Canes)
Nonu was a great in black but I never really got the impression that cared that much at the Caketin.Edit: Maybe in a few years time Ardie and Coles will be adding to the debate.
There's a few other hall of famers in the 'bubblig under' category as well. Weepu, O'Halloran, Tito, Jane, Hore, Slater, Rodders to name few -

four dudes who never won shit in a yellow jersey
TJ Perenara has played 140 times for the Hurricanes, was a key part of the side, pisses blood for them, and actually won something.

Good call.
Is winning the criteria though? Players with a legacy of adding something to the jersey would be mine. Collins and Umaga WERE the Canes in the days of the stadium being packed. Fans sported Jerry's hair-do and wore Umaga dread hats. Kids wanted to be them. I dont see or hear of the same for TJ (but your point is valid) -

He's in the discussion for sure

One player not mentioned here, but included in the article, is Beauden Barrett. Forgotten already?
can't make a Rushmore if you played for someone else in a high profile manner

He still played over 100 games for them.

I agree with your nomination but disagree that your last point should have any bearing on this selection.
So Cullen, Collins, Umaga and TJP for me. Smith, Coles, Ma'a, BB bubbling under.
-
I would of had Beaudy in the top four of this list but because heβs a traitor I will go Cullen, Umaga, Smith & Coles π
Perenara and Collins there or thereabouts aswell.
By the time he finishes his career I think Ardie will be in that top four.
-
Cullen, Collins due their impact, not who has played the most games
Then it becomes tougher Im going Smith and Coles to round out my four with TJP, Maa, BB very close behind..tough to split a few.
-
Very difficult to only select 4... but I'll go for :
C. Cullen
D. Coles
C. Smith
M. Nonu
