One domestic NZ competition?
-
@hydro11 exactly - Sky pay for games and duration. Make a shorter, tougher season, and Sky will pay less because there are people who only subscribe for the rugby, so if the professional rugby season is shorter, Sky will lose subscription revenue.
The other factor is that a lot of places have invested in infrastructure (mostly stadiums) to host a known number of home games. Shrink that substantially and there will be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth about white elephants etc.

SRA is the shorter tougher season
I'm advocating for a longer professional competition with the best players

As everyone knows, I love NPC, I love Northland, I love club footy, schoolboy footy...but I am in a smaller group who's love is more for thier province than the ABs.
me too, its hard to change gears from supporting several underdog teams to supporting the AB's
I thin ive said before my enthusiasm is almost inversely proportional to the level, i would love to see Otago Boys win the top for...and then i would love to see Dunedin win the Dunedin club comp and up the ladder we go

I still reckon having an 'elite' comp is a great idea, stepping stone to ABs if you will. I pretty happy with structure we got now.
What is the "structure we got now."?
It's different to the structure we will have next year, it is also different to the structure we had last year, which was different to the structure we had the year before.

@yeetyaah i feel the chiefs connect with there waikato and counties province well. Thats probably the same for for the 5 main cities/franchises where the NPC teams play in front of empty stands. Definitly wellington and waikato anyway
I feel in northland most people are more supportive of the Taniwha than any super Rugby side, and that is probably reflected in our stadium numbers.
I am on record last year advocating for a comp like this. Was the perfect time. Even an NRL type scenario with NZ 10 teams 5 aussie teams. Aussies would be very strong obviously but thatd be great.

The quickest way to improve standards in New Zealand rugby is to lose to Australians.

I think its probably similar for lots of "secondary" cities/unions, i know mates from invercargill wo care little for the Highlanders, not helped by the strange seemingly deliberate removal of connections to these areas, our away jersey often cited as an example

The North Auckland Knightiwhas:
thats sick, have suggested something similar for the Highlanders but obviously darker blue and gold instead of white

the perfect amalgamation already exists

I have also suggested this.

@rapido The Turbulltchers can just use Northampton jerseys.
I'm trying to get some Wanganui into it. Plus, to differentiate them from Northampton. I'm not a fan off all teams trying to look the same, like in Super Rugby every team morphing into NSW / Northern Transvaal kit. Like shy kids trying to blend in.
But, some of those Northampton jerseys have been just absolutely fucking beautiful. Apart from that fluro one.

i have heard someone suggest, but not heard anything official there may be drivers from broadcasters for block colours, trying to avoid contrasting stripes, football world cup has pushed teams to use single colours for a while unless you have something super iconic like croatia's checkers
they had it petty right at their first go

Do people still have black and white tvs?
-
@antipodean i thought it might actually more of a modern problem, projecting sponsors on the field maybe and so having simple colours so you dont get weird shit happening on the jerseys

As Antipodean says, that was a black & white TV thing.
FIFA have been doing that, weirdly, last 20 years, not even letting shorts clash, and it makes it a very boring spectacle. Watch a review of 1986 or 82 , or 1970 world cup on youtube, it's a delight of instant recognition.
But now - Ah, it's the team in proper cololurs v the team in all white. Except if team A's proper colouts also include white shorts, then it's team in all colour v team in all white. Very boring, like amateur boxing.
But, I think you give too much credit to either officials or broadcasters in rugby to think they are controlling it. It is clubs wanting clean shirts to put their advertising on. Club officials having no idea that some peope value tradition and identity. And colour-blind, style blind designers at the kit manufacturers.
-
oh, i had it all the other way around, patterns were good for black and white so you could tell the teams apart without colour
-
@rapido Not sure if you have been watching any rugby in NZ. You know where we have a structure that involves cluc rugby, step up to Provincial rugby to Super and then to Test rugby? It is a very good reason why NZ rugby is so strong, what are you suggesting we drop provincial rugby? Or Super rugby, an elite comp between Provoncial and Test ?Sure as hell won't get much agreement from those charged with turning out test high level teams.
