@bovidae Pretty tough not to go Watling over the others on these stats.
I've only seen highlights of Smith, but based on his reputation and watching the others, BJs runs will have come in much tougher spots than the others too. Later career McCullum was a better bat, but he'd been freed from having to do several hundred squats a match.
-
For me, watling is the best all around of the 6 I have watched a fair bit of: Wadsworth, Lees, Smith, Parore, BMac and BJ. (Forget germon, Jock Edwards or young, all break glass situation or in Germon's case, regional parochialism run riot - the reuben thorne of NZ cricket
Of the 6, I actually rate Parore as the most technically proficient and smoothest of them all.
Wadsworth, Lees and Smith are pretty much all in a group - they had different strengths depending on the attack and conditions.
But in terms of all around contribution and glue, I'll take Watling everytime.
Lees, Parore and Smithy to some extent with his decision making while batting were loud personalities and could be a distraction. Wadsworth could be untidy although that may be more a case that he looked like he was perpetually just arisen from a 5 day bender. Bmac, a very good keeper but once he gave up the gloves he became a much much better player.

How desperate were we to have to play Parore as a specialist batsman though ? Even bearing in mind some of the donkeys who played for NZ his record in that department is pretty poor especially for someone who I remember being pretty proficient and good to watch at times.
McCullum could have very possibly had a Ross Taylor like record if he never kept wicket. Getting those huge scores that he did takes real talent.

is there a related fast bowler element to these figures? I think Ian Smith was a superb keeper, but he wasn't keeping to so many quality fast bowlers...wondering whether statistically that may be a factor..

One of them was pretty decent.......but fair to say Cairns, Snedden, Chats, Morrison etc weren’t what you’d call rapid.

you must be a young chap, in his day Morrison was considered relatively quick--we were obviously very very desperate..

Danny was pretty quick for a little guy. Had that high release to make the most of his reach. Had a bit of attitude too, in a Wags sort of way if I recall. Typical fast bowler mentality

I always felt a bit sorry for Parore being asked to jump about the order - I mean they asked him to bat #3 vs attacks of the quality of 90s Pakistan and South Africa FFS. He never achieved his real potential as a batsman TBH, though he was probably more technically sound than 5/6ths of the other batsmen in his team.

You also have to take account that the attacks he faced in his early days were stronger though and his big scores were all in the last 3-4 years of his career. But that period he was just scary in being able to take apart any attack - three very fast double hundreds and a lightning quick 195 that RWNJ jinxed in his commentary.

While I was in the stats looked at this
Dismissals/matches
Watling 257/65
Parore 201/67
BMac 179/52
Smith 176/63Possibly the most telling stat about bowling attack efficacy in the last 40 years. Smith didn't miss 80 odd chances 🙂
The evolution of NZ pitches in there too

Slightly tongue in cheek, I vaguely remember a few occasions where Parore was holding a technically perfect defensive shot while the stumps were broken behind him. Probably a reflection of both his technique and the quality of the bowlers around back then.
Wasim and Waqar. The '93 chase at Seddon Park v Pakistan is the reason why I will never be able to relax in a small run chase ever

Not even Harvey Norman has enough couches to hide behind to escape those two in full flight...

I remember the ads before they arrived. Something about 160kph from both of them, missing the point that they both shifted it sideways as well, but it was a good promotion, even if a little exaggerated.

Waqar didn’t actually open the bowling interestingly enough. Aaqib Javed did. I remember that game very well, With a line up consisting of Blair Hartland, Rod Latham, Ken Rutherford, Chris Harris, Murphy Sua, Dipak Patel and Michael Owens did we expect any other result ?
