Cricket 2021: NZ in England and WTC Final

I think this article by Aussie arse kissing Pom Mark Nicholas sums up the coverage so far absolutely perfect.
Waxing lyrical about the Indian player consistently, disappointment when they get out, many an anecdote about pretty much so all teams that play the game apart from NZ, and then a couple of lines dropped in to mention the opposition (who are arguably ahead in this test).

Maybe my most hated commentator in any sport, and I hate a lot of commentators.
Just a consistently shocking level of obsequiousness, constantly sucking aussie cock.

Two full days is enough time for us to get a result, but maybe not India unless they really roll through us for 50 odd. We could in theory bat a day and end up with a lead of 150ish, then put them in on the final day and have a fair old crack at them.
I reckon we need to take a few risks. Try to score a quick 220 in a couple of sessions.
There isn't really that much risk to us of losing. Let's say we go too hard and get rolled for 50 more.
So we are then 60 behind with 5 and a half sessions to play. India will want to score at least another 240 to set us 300 to win in a day or just under. Doesn't seem very likely to me that they can do this or would even try. I don't see many credible paths to a defeat, but I can see a credible path to victory.

They've got to move forward with a week or 8 days to finish this format-saving WTC concept. Timeless tests were once the norm.
Special playing conditions for the final would be universally embraced and removes test cricket's only real Achilles heel.A timeless test to decide the final would be awesome. Nowhere to hide for either team, the ultimate test.

Was contemplating we declare at our current score, and force them to set a target.
I kind of think India would be more scared of loaingthan we are.

The issue there is time can be a weapon too.

Not if it's only used to counter the weather stopping play. For example, they've factored in 1 extra day, why not factor in 2 or 3. If no rain, then just use the original 5 days

I don't know enough about pitches and how they wear in humidity, but would we really want to be chasing a target on day 6?
Williamson would win world praise for his sportsmanship, but that's the only thing that would be won. If we are going to take a risk, I agree with Damo's risk taking strategy. Up the pace, risk getting rolled for 50 odd more runs and then we are in no worse situation than declaring now.
If we can make 200 more runs in 2 sessions (and that's a massive if) then we are in the box seat. If we can make 250, then we can't really lose.
-
@damo Last two days would also in theory be extended days.
But, they don't even need to go that hard until they get their noses in front. If we could retain wickets, then we could gradually accelerate to an almost T20 assault.
Declare with 3.5 sessions remaining and - as you say, we have a credible path to victory and no real chance of losing.

Highlights anyone? Foxtel are a bit slow, only day 2 thus far.
I suggest you don't try to search on YouTube unless you want to find yourself exclaiming WTF! at the offerings
The official ICC Facebook page has 5 minute videos for each day.

Cricket in summer in England. What could possibly go wrong with weather?

@Damo @MajorRage @Chris-B some pretty optimistic scenarios you fullas are throwing out 😀
Given the way this pitch is playing and the quality of both sides, it seems a draw is the only likely outcome.

Special shout out to BJ behind the stumps as well - he has been absolutely superb in really challenging conditions.
Great post mate. But be careful the ‘shout out’ police on this forum will be coming for you…

If both sides decide to play for it, I totally agree.
My scenario's only work if one side (leaning towards us as the current batting side), decides to go for it. If I was in charge, my aims would be this
- Try and bat 45 overs tomorrow. That should take us to drinks in sessions 2 & we should be relative parity from here
- Anything above this should be a lead. Impossible to assess what this should be without seeing conditions and the wicket tomorrow. BUT, regardless of anything, India should be batting at the end of the day. For at least 10 overs.
Make no mistake, they probably have the best batting line up to block it out. Conditions won't be great. Likely overcast and humid.
Wagner time.
