Cricket 2021: NZ in England and WTC Final
-
Celebrations well deserved but time to get nervous just a little now.
All of our bats have shown some frailty in these tests. Hopefully just down to rust for some.
All in front of us now and time to pick the XI for the final. I have to write this down to get my ducks in a row.
Locked in, No question (9 players).
Latham
Conway
KW
Taylor
Nicholls
Boult
Southee
Wagner
WatlingSo 2 spots for
CdG
or MitchellSantner
or PatelJamieson
or Henry3 into 2 doesn't go so decisions are
Pitch dependent
4 quicks and an 'all-rounder'?
3 quicks, a spinner and an allrounder?Or the oddball
4 quicks and a spinnerI think we can ignore the last one.
CDG will have the running over Mitchell
Jamieson over Henry
and sadly Santner over Patel.I can see the logic of a spinner if they think the game will go 5 days but if that's the case would rather not Santner.
I am thinking that the decision may come right down to the toss. If India bat first go all in with pace. If we are going to bat first please, please pick Patel. -

About the pitch for the final:
"Pitch preparation for this Test is a little simpler as we are a neutral venue, we are guided by the ICC, but we all want is a good pitch that offers an even contest between the teams." "For me personally I just want to get something out that has some pace, bounce and carry in the pitch. It can be a hard thing to do in England as the weather doesn't help us most of the time, but the forecast in the build-up is good with a lot of sun, so we are hopeful that we'll get some pace and a hard pitch without over-rolling it and killing it.

Weβre singing from the same hymn sheet brother, and as a fellow long suffering Black Caps fan I bet youβre as happy as I am at the state of the team !!!!

you know what is going to fuck me off?
Despite all our "recent" success (it's actually like 6-7 years of sustained high performance) there is still no respect on our name.
We get shit tour schedules, 2 test series, and shoved to the outsides of domestic summers by asshole teams we are actually better than, but are clinging to history, or the fact there are a billion of them, and they have nothing else in their lives.
By the time other countries wise up (if that ever happens) this generation of players will have moved on, we won't be as good, results will fall, and we will get shunted back from any better fixtures we might have been able to access.
While these times are all sorts of awesome, the lack of recognition irks me.

Yeah I think at one stage Alastair Cook had played about twice as many tests as Ross Taylor despite them debuting around the same time and being about the same age ?
The lack of respect shits me too. How good would a five test series be against this English team ?

Yep, lots of comments out there from people questioning why we are in the WTC final and why are we #1.
We just beat England at home while resting half the team and clearly having our eye on a bigger prize next week.2 ODI World Cup finals and a WTC final all in the space of 6 glorious years.
Yep we have been thumped along the way (in Oz a couple years ago) but so has everyone else at some point. -

You'll get less if you ever become every shade of awesome!!!
That post of M4L's encapsulates everything that fucks me off about the
Unfairly Shield. We'll probably get a challenge this year, when half our team is propping up the All Blacks!

@crucial Jamieson is absolutely locked in in my mind.
The only decision is whether we need to play a spinner or not.
In all honesty, I'm inclined to take the Clive Lloyd route and just say, "Why?" Play our four seamers and Mitch Jr. or CdG and damn the torpedos. It gives us our strongest batting line-up and we should not forget that a draw allows us a share of the title.
But, I think it's likely that Stead will want one - and I think that means going your oddball route and 4 quicks and a spinner, with Santner batting 7. The batting is light that way, which heaps additional pressure on the top order.
Throwing out a wild idea - how come more (any) fast bowlers don't also teach themselves to bowl spin? There's heaps of specialist batsman who seem to be able to roll down a few overs of spin in international cricket, but I can't really recall anyone since Gary Sobers who bowled specialist seam and spin (and Sir Garfield bowled both offspin and legspin as required - as well as being a sensational batsman).
You'd think that a specialist seamer would be more likely to also make a good spinner compared to a batsman - but, none of them seem to bother. And I've never seen anyone in the nets at club cricket who didn't fuck around a bit bowling (or trying to bowl) a bit of spin.

@Chris-B you guys have the most potential challenges this year.
Some teams have only one potential challenge that comes about when a pig flys over the protestant Pope's house.
It's like someone doing the draw is sick of hearing the whiny noises from the top of the south.

You are probably right. I just think it is crazy to shorten the batting simply to create a place for a guy that doesn't take wickets or tie up one end.
-
@crucial The probability of most of our paths is fucking low though.
If anyone halfway competent was running the competition, the Mako should have just been given a challenge in week 1.
But, there's a bunch of ex-fucking rugby players running things, who's brains don't appear to go past "going through our processes and the outcome will work out".

If we want spin down the line then I reckon take the captaincy off KW ( less pressure ) give it to Latham and get our premier batsman to send down a few overs, heβs actually pretty decent.

Collin Miller is the last one I can think of. Not Sober's league of course, but he did far too well against us...
