@crazy-horse Douglas is a good NPC player and that’s it in my opinion.

We are missing Todd’s breakdown work and more importantly his link play. None of our current crop seem to support in attack.

A few years back Dunshea had a storming game for an invitation XV vs the B&I Lions, yet he's barely featured in the loose forwards since as far as I can recall. They're shifting SBarrett to 6.

He's been excellent from the bench the last couple of games has Dunshea.

Sanders should be better for his run.

@foobanz Rayasi is on the outer as they didn't like that he made himself available for the 7s last year and Holland hates a showboat. And hes been offered an extension (not sure how long hes currently signed for) but hasn't re-signed which has seen him slip down the pecking order.

Rayasi's contract expires after this SR season.

The Hurricanes are the franchise with the most player contracts expiring this year; quite a lot more than other franchises (disclaimer: as far as contract duration has been made public).

Holland sounds like a retard if that is the attitude.

Who needs a supercar when you could have a team of Hiluxs.

@nogusta Hope he can find a gig somewhere where they will treat him better. Way too talented to not be playing regularly.

@canes4life I thought Jordie was pretty good at 10 today! 🙂

I don't mind if he plays fullback - he's not fast enough to play wing.

Where the AB coaches have missed a trick, IMO, is shifting him around wing, first five and fullback - when if they were going to try any experiments with him - I'd love to see him playing 2nd five.

Size-wise he could play a sort of SBW game, with better kicking and probably passing skills.

However, if they put him there now - they'll look like they're really fucking him about.

Couple of times I have seen him at 12 he has fairly good. Used to be his preferred position.

I missed out the crucial point that he was playing No. 8 that day - and he was a stand out.

@nogusta that's complete stupidity from Holland if that's the case

@Canes4life I hope they don't see Proctor there long term, he is good on D, but a lot of attacking plays die with him. Seems like one of those players who gets nervy when the line has been broken and throws a poor pass, or gets the dropsies / runs a bad support line when players try to find him

Hopefully we select IWL + Scrafton/Mitchell moving forward

@bovidae It's slightly surprising how few of these guys have really kicked on given it should have been sort of a development team.

@chris-b Few? 11 are playing Super Rugby, 2 are playing Top League, 1 Top 14, 1 Top 10 (Italy), 2 are back playing NPC after stints in Japan, 1 has returned from MLR (thanks to Covid, so probably hopes to be back playing NPC), 1 has retired (having played SR etc), 1 has retired due to injury (career cut short), 1 (with 5 SR caps) was about to play in the SLAR, but then Covid happened, and 1 was a Heartland player who was never expected to play at a higher level than that. Basically, Inga Finau is the only one who didn't end up playing professionally, without injury preventing him from doing so.

Or did you expect all/most of them to become All Blacks? I certainly didn't, as they were selected from provincial teams, not SR franchises. In that case, one AB (Reece), one in the AB fringes (Dunshea) and one Maori AB (Lowe) is indeed few, but maybe you expected too much?

@stargazer I probably would have expected a few more ABs - BUT also a few more who are now genuine first choice players in their Super franchises.

Four years later and I'd say only Ross, Goodhue and Reece fall into that category.

@chris-b If you measure "kicking on" as becoming a "genuine" regular starter (I don't), then you're right, although Jager and Lowe may be on their way to join that group. Boshier, Dunshea and Makalio have the "bad luck" being stuck behind ABs, but would be first choice players in other teams.

Still, I think earning well-paid professional contracts is what the players themselves would consider a success, especially if they get to see something of the world outside NZ.

@stargazer You'll see that I wrote "really kicked on" and the really has meaning.

I'd imagine that the selectors of that team didn't just pull names out of the hat, but mainly picked guys they thought had genuine promise.

Not really reflecting on the players - but, if I was the selectors I'd be a bit disappointed at the outcomes to date.

However, it's subjective, so I can be disappointed and you not! 🙂

That team was meant to have a player from each NPC province, and I think there is apart from Manawatu. Sweeney had a long career after this. 😉
