Even the aussie commentators are better at the moment. If you can buff past them talking up aussie teams...
Can we get the honey badger in?...
He might teach some people how to be funny

Watching the Breakdown on YouTube. Andrew Mehrtens really has become a fat fluffybunny in retirement. He needs to spend less time in the pie shop or at the cheese counter, more time on the treadmill or on the rowing machine. It's sad to see a former pro-athlete let himself go like that.
fucken Joe Wicks over here

The TJ/Meg combo hit one of it's low points over the weekend. The continual whinging and criticising of ref decisions made the commentary sound more like the reading of a TSF match thread or putting a mic in front of a couple of idiots at the pub.
At one point Marshall had the gall to say 'I don't want to be calling out the referees but....'
If the ref really was shocking then maybe call it out but this is them having a crack at things they just disagree with. FFS Sky tell them to pull their heads in.
BTW the clamping down on players advancing ahead of a kick is a good thing. It may look like it isn't affecting play but it helps the defence get their line set and organised more quickly against counter attacks (especially on the second phase).

@crucial is the guy on the right Derpus?
I'm no lip-reader, but he does seem to be ranting "Super Rugby Trans Ta$man is shit, let's take our ball and go home and just play with ourselves".
-
@crucial fucken eh, it was appalling. The amount of times Meg whinges at the ref and is completely wrong anyway is astounding. I had to laugh at how many times he called a set piece move and they did almost the opposite, that was funny. I was actually wondering if he was on the piss.

Dead right it does. I remember Ted talking about it years ago and trying to get refs to enforce it to open up games. He even went on to make the point that a touch finder was the same. I.E. ball is out but players that were in front of the kicker rushed up to form a lineout to prevent a quick throw in.
As I understand it, it doesn't matter if the ball has gone out, you still can't advance until put onside?
One other thought on that law is that kickers always seem to think that they need to chase the ball. I was taught to just run straight up field if you have done an angled kick, cover the shortest distance to get in front of your team mates, particularly from behind the forwards in a ruck or maul. Don't seem to see that much now or maybe watching on TB means that it isn't visible.

Yeah, it just shows how stupid these so called experts commenting on the game are. Having a forward turn and start advancing ahead of the kicker usually results in that forward covering a channel that impacts on the running lines and options of the team bringing the ball back. Just like an offside defender that shuts down a 10s options in sending the ball wide.

Dunno quite where you'd find that in the Laws, but it doesn't sound right to me.
Surely, once the ball is in touch - that phase of play is ended. If the other team wants to take a quick throw in that's their choice and risk?

Correct. It was debated quite heavily a few years back as quick throws became a popular attacking option..Once the ball is out then play has stopped and you can only be offside during play.
You can still be offside advancing before the ball has crossed touch though.
Henry's take on it was worth discussing. He was looking to open up more attacking options and if players were getting away with crowding off the QT option from a kick that happened behind them he was trying to see if something could be done rules wise. -

I didn't find it in the laws, as I said, it did come from Ted, so I was hoping that he knew what he was talking about. He was probably talking about players advancing full stop. They need to be put onside until the AR puts the flag up to enable a quick throw in, until then the ball is in play.
-
Fucken hell I am so fucking sick of kiwi commentators not knowing the laws and then moaning about the ref playing to the laws.
You were an AB tight forward Kane, how do you not understand must stay connected?
Why do the kiwi commentators have to do such poor advertising of the game.

@bones Given Hames was the most penalised forward in Super Rugby one season, perhaps it isn't so surprising that he has no idea.
Oh I didn't know that, I thought he was just being deliberately obtuse so that he could have a go at the ref, but maybe not.

The relentless negativity of Jeff Wilson. He needs to go.
Someone should invite him to post on the Fern - he sounds like he'd fit in, with massive scope to choose from...

The players brains definitely suck
The coaches suck
The referees suck
The Laws suck
The jerseys suck
The stadia suck
The stadia food and drinks suck

Modern rugby sucks!!!Things have been really negative around here for a while now when it comes to rugby. Seems worse than normal. Are we getting older and grumpier, or does rugby actually suck at the moment?

Probably all that you mention is correct but we have a contest, that isn't a contest, doesn't help. The whole point of top level sport is a match up. Depending on how you define match. I like this one:
a person or thing that is equal to another in quality or strength. -

AB's have underwhelmed for several years, lots of top players have left and most squads are a bit thin, and the Crusaders have dominated for years. Not a lot to be enthusiastic about for most posters.
