Starting this off in the sports forum as it'd be good to keep it on topic related only to sporting things and I think it's a good idea ...

Anyway, to start it off - Dale Steyn. It seems that resident commentator Simon Doull noted that he'd grown his hair out and called it a mid life crisis hairstyle ... Steyn has responded with the below rant. Doull has not responded (publicly at least).

Is there something I've missed? Is hairlength-ism some sort of bigoted thing in SA that cannot be joked about? Or is this just an epic sense of humour failure?

@majorrage haven't seen the hair in question, but all I'll say is it's lucky Fakatava isn't as thin-skinned. It's not like rugby commentators have plenty of "free" time to fill gaps in play too...

Don't think I could talk about him in my local curry house. Tava is their specialty curry (and it's epic).

Steyn’s comments reminded me of another Sth African sportsman’s sense of humour failure. I give you Brendan Venter’s interview from 2010.

Looks like he takes it pretty seriously given this response to somebody ... although it makes a bit of a mockery of his soapbox rant here ...

I was worried about Venter when I saw that. Turns out he was just totally taking the piss in some sort of stand about being gagged to talk about referees.

South Africans are quite a serious bunch. Steyn certainly does himself no favours by whinging online about it.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a sense of humour free zone quite like Hanse Cronje when he was interviewed, he was probably worried about matches to fix rather than looking for opportunities to make cheeky quips I guess.

Seems Dale is very touchy. He always had wild eyes though

Serious question .... what is woke about a joke about long hair???

I cannot see a single thing wrong, from any point of view, with what Doull said! Agree it’s disappointing, Steyn is a dead set legend.

no, nothing, nothing at all. But a joke about long hair turned in to Dale lumping himself in with those suffering homophobia, racism and any other form of modern oppression you care to name.

It was a inoffensive as a throwaway line can be.

Clearly knows nothing about a mid life crisis either ... not even close to an insult

It’s a wonder Steyn survived as long as he did in the game and compiled the ( extremely impressive ) record that he did if he is this much of a crybaby.

They say you should never meet your heroes....perhaps that needs to extend to never reading their tweets as well.

Well I think any number of batsmen have a bit of ammo should they feel the need to engage in a few verbals.....
