I actually think that in the Henry and early Hansen era one of the good things was the way the ABs could sometimes adjust their game. I remember there was a period where the Bok pack was starting to take on mythical proportions (kind of like the Boks now actually) and the ABs would just focus on smashing them up front, they'd do it with England quite often too (2019 aside obviously). Yet we always had the playing at speed and counter attacking in the back pocket.
It's a bit worrying when we get too reactionary, although the reaction to 2009 kick fest worked out quite well in that we brought in a different style of wing for a couple of years.
-
@nepia similarly when we played Aus, we adjusted our game to make Pocock ineffective, granted the opposition has been limited under Fosters reign, I havent seen alot to suggest they have any game...which is what makes the SA game huge, hoping we see some tweaks.

That 2019 semi final was the coaching group trying to be too cute, by putting in Barrett and taking out Cane (I cant type that without getting angry), and the constant chopping and changing in the back line (midfield especially).
On the other hand, Eddie had a strategy of how to play to our potential weaknesses, and some of them came off (eg, targeting Mo’unga on defense). Had we picked a better team and had he made a tackle that game could/would likely be a different result and Hanson would be revered as a god. It didn’t though.

He definitely left one or two players out that could have helped. No doubt if he nurtured Akira maybe he would have developed in time to give us more physicality in the pack

Class act. Congratulations to the big fella.
On what position he plays the question for me is are we better with 1 or 2
1 - Ioane / Papali’i (or Blackadder) / Savea
2 - Ioane / Savea / Jacobsen (or Sotutu)When it comes to work around the park I don’t think it matters too much for Ardie, he’s going to play pretty much the way he always does. But what complements his (and Ioane’s) game better - the options at 7 in the squad or the options at 8?
I do like Ardie’s game off the back of the attacking scrum. And given it could be an Ardie / Perenara 8/9 combo, that has shown to be pretty effective.
I think it will come down to whether they want Papali’i or Jacobsen starting. There’s definitely merit in both, but I’m leaning that they go with 1 and they have Jacobsen or Sotutu on the bench.
-
@act-crusader that Ioane, Savea and Jacobson combo worked really well against Fiji but Foster has moved away from it ever since. I hope we get to see it again because I feel it’s the most balanced trio we have.
-
@act-crusader looking forward to seeing how our tight forwards go against the Boks.

@stargazer Channeling Zinny.

Sotutu is only a no.8 so his lack of utility will count against him. Jacobson can play 6/7/8, Papalii 6/7 and Savea 7/8 so there are options and versatility with those players. It is also likely that it is Ioane who will be subbed more often than Papalii so there is less disruption if Jacobson just slots into 6. The fun will start when Cane is back and who gets the bench loose forward position.

Blackadder also adds more than Sotutu as a bench option, having already been tried successfully at 8 and 7 for the Crusaders and at 7 for the AB's.
Foster mentioned when they selected him at 7 they think he can cover all 3 positions. -

Of Course,Foster is the AB coach ,cough cough

I think v SA we need the physicality and defence that Papali'i brings, so that automatically pushes Ardie to 8...I think v Aus and Arg we can run Ardie at 7 and have Jacobson or Sotutu at 8, but v SA I think it will be Akira, Dalton & Ardie.
-
very glad theyve picked someone thats going to start rather than picking a captain and then having to shoehorn him in and possibly displace someone
Ardie has always struck me as a lead by example kind of guy, good in a lot of ways but i hope BB is going to be in his ear pointing out what the backline has on

Sotutu has come off the bench for the ABs 4 out of his 6 tests, so I don’t think it’s too much of an issue. And on each of those occasions he’s replaced the blindside flanker.
