@crazy-horse When I was in Adelaide last year during the initial Super Rugby season, they didn't even show many games on Fox Sports.

There's a bit more to it.

A deal fell through late last week.

Some dodginess going on by the sounds.

The majority of Super Rugby matches will not be aired in pubs and clubs around Australia after a deal between Stan Sport and Sky Channel was pulled on the eve of the first game of the season.

Sources with knowledge of negotiations told the Herald the deal was scuppered at the 11th hour after a Tabcorp senior executive learnt Sky Channel had reached an agreement without the consent of its parent company, Tabcorp.

Equally, Tabcorp officials were concerned that Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys, a key partner of the wagering giant, had not been consulted prior to the deal being brokered.

Industry sources say V’landys, who is also the chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission, had not vetoed the deal. However, they say he was unhappy about Sky Channel’s agreement with Stan Sport as he believed it would have a negative impact on wagering.

    Further down that article:

The news comes just a week after V’landys complained to Nine Entertainment Co, the owner of Stan and the publisher of this masthead, about the lack of promotion for the upcoming NRL season in comparison to the rebranded Super Rugby competition, which started on Friday night. V’landys did not want to comment when contacted on Friday night.

We have a pub as our major partner and they barely show any rugby at all unless you ask and there aren't 3 games each of AFL + Loig + Cricket + Horses + Dogs on

@nta definately, before i got foxtel i had a tame pub that would put the super rugby on the screen at the back for me, only ywo small table could see the screen so was perfect for me and the odd person that wold come in

now im ditching foxtel i'll try and do the same (new local) for things like cricket or potentially the ABs in europe?

In the case of one particular match, Fox wasn't broadcasting it in South Australia. I checked their website at the time.

I mean, they would have loved to, but only 5 channels and 300 games of AFL....

so only one match had some sort of clash? which would be understandable given the weird time of year etc, or does foxtel have different schedules in different states?

@kiwiwomble I think they have different schedules in SA, because the match was on TV in NSW etc.

I remember finding an English pub willing to put on a Bledisloe game for me, on one of their three sports channels. A fucking tight match, either side could win... and 10 minutes to go, they switch the channel. I'm all "what the actual fucking fuck!?", and they're like "yeah, well, it's the first weekend of sook-ball, and the other channels are taken by other sook-ball games, so this one's going to show Bumfuck United vs Cockwomble Wanderers... and the 20 minute pre-match is just about to start". A pre-match for some 4th grade unknown match-up was more important than an international test between 2 of the top-3 teams in the world (I'm pretty sure the yellow-shirts were around #3 at the time)

Fucking fluffybunnies. Even during the 2015 World Cup, hosted by the pricks, I was in pubs where 90% of the TVs were dedicated to some bullshit sook-ball, with a small TV in the corner showing rugby for the sake of the thousands of fans who'd flown in to the country for a major event.

And this was BEFORE england got kicked out of their own tournament. Jesus, it's good to remember that happening.

While Stan work out a solution, both Nine and Rugby Australia executives were thrilled with the audience that tuned in for the Reds’ record-breaking win against the Waratahs.

The Herald has learned the match was watched by about 200,000 people across 9Gem and Stan Sport. About 150,000 of those viewers tuned in on Nine’s secondary channel and the other 50,000 watched via Stan’s new streaming arm.

Combined, the numbers tripled the total viewership for the corresponding match in the first round last year.

The deal with Tabcorp is at a stalemate and that has left Stan executives with little choice but to think outside the square.

@kiwimurph surprising numbers, thought it had been a petty quiet kick off but that is maybe just a case of being in Melbourne

@kiwiwomble It's been the most heavily advertised season launch for a long time - billboards, Australian Open tv ads etc.

Got Stan last night. Not bad at all. Even got to watch Beauden Barrett’s first game in Japan. Quite entertaining but the standard is still pretty shit. When the likes of Tevita Li carve up like Lomu then you know it isn’t exactly top drawer.
