First Ref to a 100 Tests this weekend. Terrific achievement.

Probably the best referee I've seen and up there with McCaw & co in the annals of Rugby. Pretty much a role model off the pitch as well.

Yep. Top ref. Doesn’t take too much notice of his assistants and shock horror the game flows better.

Angus Gardner was coaching from the sidelines last weekend, schooling NIc Berry.

    Best banter too

To a hooker ‘I’m straighter than that throw’
to a diver ‘come back and play next week’ soccer game
    etc.

Thoroughly good bloke. Saw him speak (and sing) a few years ago. Reffed his first senior match at age 16. No wonder he is good.

As funny as that is, he did have a terrible time coming to terms with things earlier on and we are lucky that he is still around.
Most of you probably know this - He was rescued off the side of a Welsh mountain after swallowing a truckload of pills (paracetamol I think) in a suicide atttempt. Hypothermia, etc. He was mid twenties I think.
He had left a note for his parents and the police helicopter found him.

His positivity and wit now are remarkable since he came out.

Heard him being interviewed by Mark Richardson after the 2013 Ellis Park Test Classic. Really opened up on what the game was like to referee ("very easy in a game like that") and his refereeing style. Came across as very, very confident but equally humble and player-centric

He said that was his favourite match. Lots of great ones, but he really enjoyed that match in particular. Ireland v AB in Dublin the same year was second.

@Machpants was one where he jokingly showed the ball boy a YC after he kicked or threw the ball on the park and it hit him.

Seems to have a great rapport with players and a feel for the game, knowing when he needs to issue warnings or if he can let it flow.

Hopefully when he retires WR employ him as a ref coach. Not only does he demonstrate a good rapport with players and an understanding he's there to facilitate a game of rugby, he clearly has a better feel for the game than most and looks like he actually enjoys a good, skilful game.

    RWC2015 Final:

    "How are you feeling Dan?"

    "I'm absolutely fucked, Nige."

"Mind the language now, we're on telly"

Outstanding role model for referee's. Totally understands the game of rugby, and not just from a rule point of view.

Always my first choice of referee.

He'd probably make a good commentator. Knowing the laws gives him an advantage over many of them..

    And he’s done.

Real shame. Another reason to watch rugby has departed.

Going into a coaching role with the WRU, and will still be reffing lower levels, so plenty of involvement left for him.

@Godder It's a pity he'll no longer officiate test matches; he's the aboslute best. I enjoyed watching test matches with him as the referee. I like his sense of humour. There was always that moment in a match where he'd say or do something that made me laugh.

@Stargazer agree, but I guess like playing the game, better to hang up the boots a bit early than hang on too long.

This is really good. A Times Radio extended interview with Nigel Owens for the Past Imperfect podcast:

    Past Imperfect: Nigel Owens

    Past Imperfect: Nigel Owens

Nigel Owens MBE became the first referee to take charge of 100 Rugby Union international games before his retirement last autumn. He joined Rachel and Alice from his farm in Wales, where he opened ...
