@mariner4life You get no arguments from me about playing two 7s in the loose forwards!

Whoever made the excellent post about him fitting pairs of players into the team nailed it.

He's tried to pick safely and it's bitten him on the arse and backed him into a corner.

He currently has the second worst AB coaching record - equal with Vodanovic at 40% winning record.

and when was that, the 40's or so?

1970 and 1971 - vs the Boks and B&I Lions. Two quality teams.

    who many consider a failure

    i don't.

If only for that glorious 3 week period in 2003 where we stuck 50 past the Boks and the Wallabies on their turf, and then came home to reclaim the Bledisloe.

Mitch cops too much shit. his only problem was picking too many "technically good" Crusader forwards.

Cullen was cooked, suck it up Nepia

@mariner4life Reading Mitch's book he came across as pretty oddball, so he might have had a few more problems than just selections.

But, results-wise he has copped an unfair amount of shit - and when he was in the job, the media (Deaker, Golightly et al) absolutely went for the jugular.

i think his history proves that he comes in, has success, and then very quickly wears out his welcome.

Yep, the shit coach signal - although it doesn’t differentiate between Mitch, the Hammettuer or Philpott.

But, at any rate Cullen was only one of Mitch’s many issues!

I would have assumed those two were pro Mitch rather than anti him just going by them all being fluffybunnies.

Reflecting on the Mitch/Deans era, I always got the impression they recognised they would get shit for some of their decisions but a decision needed to be made as they only had two years until the 2003 RWC.

Assuming we get a full international season and Fozzie pulls a 0-13 losing streak, are we handing the same poisoned chalice to Fozzies successor?

    He wouldn't get that far.

I could have posted this in more than one thread:

Scott Robertson and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) are yet to strike a deal, but are making progress on a contract extension which will ensure the Crusaders coach stays put.

That will be music to the ears of rugby fans spooked by the All Blacks’ shaky 2020 campaign, one which had some calling for coach Ian Foster’s head after he mustered just three wins from six tests.

Locking up Robertson beyond the end of next season should be a priority for NZR administrators, who will need a contingency plan if they opt not to extend Foster’s initial two-year deal through the 2023 World Cup.

“Getting there, yeah,” Robertson said of the contract negotiations.

“I’ve had some conversations with New Zealand Rugby. They've come down and had a chat, we are just in the process of asking a few questions about processes in the future and what that might look like, so I get a bit of assurance of what they’re thinking when opportunities arrive.”

It’s no secret Robertson, having coached the Crusaders to four straight titles since taking over in 2017, wants nothing more than to coach the All Blacks.

Should another wonky campaign prompt NZR to move on from Foster at the end of 2021, that opportunity could come as soon as 2022. If not, he will have to wait at least two more years. Even then, nothing is guaranteed.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also played a part in an extension not yet being signed, given negotiations were temporarily suspended, Robertson said.

He’s also continuing to speak to British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland regarding assisting during next year’s tour of South Africa.

Robertson doesn’t expect a full-blown assistant’s job, but has floated the possibility of assisting defence coach Andy Farrell.

It would need signed off by NZR, which earlier this year gave Crusaders assistant Jason Ryan the green light to join Fiji as their forwards coach.

“We’ve had some good conversations the last couple of weeks,” Robertson said on Wednesday.

“It wasn't an assistant role I was wanting, it was a learning opportunity for me, to help out with the professional development and to support the current coaching group. It wasn't about being an assistant as such.

"Those conversations are continuing … it's a highly likely chance, I'm finding ways I can get there."
