Mouthguards

I lost my front two at 11. I have a partial plate and a crooked tooth because they wouldn't do anything until I was 18 because my jaw was still growing. All through my teens with a small black stump where my teeth should be.
Not great for your self confidence.
Didnt have mouthguards in those days - or ACC.

Correct tackle technique - biting down (clench), tongue on the roof of the mouth - will stabilise the neck.
You know they're different muscles, yeah?
You know they don't operate in isolation, yeah?
You have to tense your neck to close your mouth?
Bro do you even rugby?
Not being front row I've kept sufficient synapses to not have to concentrate on closing my mouth.

they are picking on Savea unfairly - he obviously cannot find a suitable one tall enough to fit the length (height) of his teeth.

I used to find it super difficult to wear them, always wanted to gag.
Always thought that stifling a gag reflex was a beneficial skill for girlfriends and porn stars, never realised it was for rugby players too.
Next time I'll use another word!

Seeing as we are on gag reflex and mouthguards - do the @canefan s of this world still use that metal thing full of builders putty and stick it halfway down your throat to make a mould?
It's called alginate. If used correctly it doesn't go down. You should feel lucky, in the olden days they used plaster of paris

How do fit one for kids with braces? Dentist I went to didn't have much luck with the mould, got shredded by them

Good question, and you would really seriously want one if you have braces. Are they still a mouthful of sharp edged metal wire and screws / glue?
I never had them, teeth were all good, but hate to think what a hockey stick to the jaw / mouth would have done to me.

You might need to cover the wires with wax or something so enable an impression to be taken

@canefan Think that I had the plaster of Paris. Seaweed sounds good by comparison.
Still the way the mouthgaurds are made? Mould, etc? No modern tech to do it directly?
thermoplastic rubber
Still need the mould first though right?
I was getting at a new tech / product that could be done in one go. Like the mould but it actually became the mouthguard. Bite it and get handed it type thing.

I got one when I had braces (while I was at grad school). My ortho either had or told me where to buy it, and then fitted it for me. I’m not sure whether that is common or whether they were doing it because they were feeling sorry for me after my mouth got grated.
Funnily enough, one of the nurses took a shine to me and set me up on a date with her daughter. The mother was quite hot for her age so I said ok.
I guess the daughter looked like her Dad.

Still need the impression. Some dentists have 3D scanners now, which would eliminate the need for an impression as they would 3d print a working model. Might be more costly though as most technicians don't make them like that
