Some random thoughts following a belated rewatching of last 30:
-
A key difference was that Oz put 10 on us when we had yellow, and we were outscored when Koroibete off! A heinous failure to take anything from last minute or two of first half on Wobblie goal line.
-
Oz 22 exits were excellent. Ours were muddled, apart from one howitzer from Giraffe.
-
All Barretts very mixed bags. Good, bad and ugly.
-
Not sure Laumape did much wrong, although impact much less than hoped for. I'd have kept him and swapped Reece, who was error prone.
-
Around 60 mark AB forwards weren't getting to the rucks. One led to penalty which Hodge missed.
-
Subs by both sides at 50 swung game Oz's way.
-
In last 13 the big territory gains by both sides were upshot of soft penalties -- Scooter/Aumua high tackle/Bell intereference with Weber at ruck (77).
-
Tupou.
-
Backline much better when Weber came on. His service got things moving. And assist for last try.
-
ABs very sloppy.
-
Might have been different if Karl kept on another 10/Laumape stayed and Reece off/TJP subbed around the 65.
-
Jordan HIA had unusual impact in that made it difficult to bring Vai'i on after Scooter yellow, because no back reserves left. Otherwise maybe Jordan off and DMac to come on at 77.
yeah, ive been happy to give Laumape a bit of a pass on that game, hard for a 12 to do much when the 9 is having a bad one and the 10 is completely missing, he was basically having to start stuff flat footed but with the rush defence in his face

I couldn't quite see the reason for the dissing on Laumape apart from him not being a standout. Agree with the comment above.
If your 9 is having a bad one nothing works (including an effect on BB)
I would like to think that BB, as the recipient of crap to deal with and as a senior player, would have let the coaches know. -
-
My observation of the game on second viewing is how good our kicking game was, and how average the AB kicking game was.
That was in many ways the winning and losing of the game, and followed the script from game 1 - we used our kicking game to advantage and to limit the AB broken field opportunities. Some of BB and JB's kicks were really average, especially in the final 20.
Compare that to game 3 where our kicking was abysmal and the ABs scored three (or more?) tries directly from kicks.

Thoughts on Laumape. Felt he was flat footed often, so didn't have momentum with possession. Didn't see him running with pace. That may well be a function of what was happening inside him.

Awaiting with glee the salt due to ABs getting the weeks, Wallaby getting four....

Funny article...
The fact that he singles out Cully, JK, Kearns and Horan, yet barely Marshalls comment is more a passing comment
NZ rugby must never ever ever listen to the crap that comes from UK rugby pundits.
-
is Alan Quinlan a UK rugby pundit? Doesn't he write for the Independent but .ie and played for Ireland?
And wasn't he cited for gouging about 10 years ago? -

Just watched the first half recording.
Some thoughts.
I don't see where TJ was as bad as made out.
Beauden's kicking was as bad as I remember.
Have some questions about the reffing:
- Reece penalty for playing on the ground (I think) after following up a box kick that Koroibete dropped cold was crap: wasn't tackled, won the ball, placed it back
- White threw two forward passes in one movement and not called (called it live at the ground but seems he didn't hear me)
- should he not have YC'ed the (2nd) early drive on Savea just before half time? It was immediately after Koroibete got marched, but am wondering if the yellow cancels the warning, or if it should be considered a continuation of the string of cheating ...
Obstruction.
Aussies did a LOT of it.
Especially on our chasers of kick offs and box kicks.
Wasn't even subtle.
Noticed it live but just remembered it now after watching some of the replay.
Wasn't quite as noticeable on TB but it was outright blatant.
We may have done similar, but I didn't notice coz I wasn't looking for it.
Also, have an issue (and have for a long time) with two lines of offense when the pass goes behind the first line and they keep running into the defensive line.
Perhaps a rant for a whole new thread, but maybe there's a need for a law amendment such that if the ball goes/is behind you you can't keep moving forward. Need to think that one through further ...

[snip]
You lost me there...
Even if you only watched the last 5 minutes of the 1st half and his poor option taking and indecision that cost us points, that was enough for me to say he didn’t play well. Let alone all the other poor passing, ruck watching and poorly executed box kicks.
I really hope he bounces back if he gets in the 23 in two weeks.

Replacing Weber off the bench?

Didn't he at one stage throw a pass into a huge empty space between the ABs just as they began to look dangerous? Maybe I was dreaming that one or it was a player lookalike.

It's a trained skill that you have to get the timing on so that it doesn't look like gridiron, but yes, it fucks me off no end. At one stage England were masters of putting random players in the way of forwards coming across field toward the breakdown. Happy to sacrifice a few backs from the next phase if it meant that the first planned ruck was quick ball.
As for the early shoves of Ardie at the line out I think Sam talked to the ref about danger, the ref said he had it under watch but then just before the next line out called out to the ABs not to delay bringing him down. Seemed to think we were looking to milk it. Once he had that mindset he was never going to keep hammering the convicts.
