Wayne Barnes would definitely have some hurt feelings if he visited in late 2007
Well he wasn't an AB selector as such - he just chose the winners.
THAT'S THE FUCKING AB SELECTORS JOB!!!
-
@mariner4life Yes. In that case the ref decided to do it, but I get where you are coming from and it isn't looking too flash.
-
@antipodean if your starting, regards Foster, that can't be your natural position.

I don't doubt it - but Henry and then Hansen managed to pick the best players fairly consistently. NOt like this.
Both times in a post-RWC year with Henry they did.
Look back at some of the team selections in 2004 before the EOYT - it is an absolute blender. Apart from Woodcock, Hayman and a fit Umaga all the key components of the 2005 Lions/Grand Slam team were in the 2003 semi final match day 22 - but jeez they went the long way around to get there. Even on the 2004 EOYT they insisted on playing that promising second-five from the Crusaders at 10.
Then in 2008 I don't remember it being this bad but going through the team sheets... they played Carter at 12 in a Bledisloe. Rodders started at least one 3N test in each of the 6,7 & 8 jerseys. Kaino constantly switches between 6 & 8. Toeava started at 12, 14 and 15 (off the bench at centre too). Kahui switched between centre and the wing. That is without other out of position picks in the Samoa and Munster games.

Foster is going great for the Fern getting a real good blow out. the vitriol is beautiful to watch
was thinking this, too. When was the last time the collective Fern blew up over selections? 2003?

Maybe around R&R time, with 2 XV being picked, but even then the squads were fairly uncontroversial
I respectfully disagree...and it’s not even a Cantab/Crusader thing.
Every selection can be justified in some form or other, even today’s selections, so then it just comes down to opinion.

It's always opinions - then it comes down to results.
We didn't go all that great last week and are doing the same thing.
-
So far Fozzie has a 0 % winning record as AB coach. That isn't normal.

I don’t think we are doing the same thing though. Made a change at hooker. We’ve got our best fullback at fullback.
We have selected our most experienced midfielder who has solely played in the midfield for the ABs (except one stint on the wing in an emergency vs BIL).
I agree there are still issues but there are changes there.

Guess we'll agree to disagree. There were some positional oddities, but generally the Cartel were excellent at identifying talent ant then getting the best out of it. Dane Coles stood out for me - they grabbed him as a raw, reckless muppet and turned him into a remarkable hooker

Well, still plenty of players being messed around. Our best full back is also our best 10 could be argued. His brother could be our best 15, but not a great wing. "Very arguably" our best 7 is at 8. Our best 12 is 13, our best 13 is at 12.
Plenty of opinion of course but it doesn't look right and neither did the "team" last week.
So yes, I think that we are doing the same thing again which is dissapointing.
The "building combinations" thing doesn't wash either for me when nobody knows where they should be positioned or how to link up given the lack of experience in the role, especially at test level. Yes we have had plenty of players succesfully move but we shouldn't shuffle them like cards for the same match.

Certainly not based on 2020

Not in the midfield. We're back to Hansen 2015-2019 Midfield Roulette
One of the more frustrating things of recent times.
I will say that it was a revolving door prior to settling with Nonu/Conrad
I can remember a lot of different combinations prior to that world class one!

more so when they made changes in the more problematic area of the mid-field, and then we are told it was how they planned ot do it anyway, assume to deflect from talk of Ioane being dropped.
@nzzp think it was 25 tests in a row we had a different combo start
-
The mid field is so frustrating. It's really obvious when you make a error as a player, and you aren't sure what the guy next to you is going to do in the first instance, as you haven't played with the guy before.
And yet we keep doing it, (or swap the numbers).

I think that is where we have to be prepared to cut Foster some slack though. If he has a strong conviction that Cane/Savea at 7/8 or Jordie on the right wing is a long term answer then he should be given at least the remainder of this year to persevere with that and see if it pays dividends.
That said when you drop Ioane after one test you clearly don't have much conviction - at least in the midfield.
I almost wish we would get back to the 1980s/90s selection style where certain coaches just had fundamental objections/preferences to players based on their style of play and how that would fit into the ABs. Imagine having two successive coaches agnostic about whether Mehrtens or Spencer were better placed in the 10 jersey for example - yet here we are...

Tough to do, when he has been carrying the shit Chiefs baggage for well over a decade and not really seeming to grow out of it.
