Bledisloe One: Wellington, October 11

Firstly congratulations to the Wallabies. Start of a new era for Australian Rugby.
Sadly the same can't be said for the AB's.
It's hard to talk about the AB's without it seeming like you are ignoring the quality performance by Oz but nevertheless - DUMB - DUMB- DUMB
We have learned nothing. Playing players out of position. Don't play as a team, lack of leadership (Cane was awesome with his follow me stuff but we seemed bereft of ideas). First you win the game - take the fucking droppie. Yet despite being unable to manufacture from anything other than broken play in 80 minutes we thought we would come up with a barnstorming finish to snatch victory as have so many times before. They must have missed the memo reminding them that the team that performed those sorts of heroics was stacked with all time greatrs whereas this mob - aren't.
Yeah the last seven minutes was gripping but we actually turned it over three times but luckily got it back. It summed up a brainless team who relied on individual flair rather than a team effort.
What did we learn? The hobbit's out of form. Did some good stuff on attack and defence because he's quick but pretty poor. Two slow wings. Rieko - yeah I can see why some cream themselves over him but it was a below par effort even before you throw in the show boating. Goodhue at 12 - please no. Mounga got worse as the game went on. Smith average. Loosies - dysfunctional. Only one lock showed up - which was sort of true of the fatties as well although they do push well.....
So the pack was average at beast and lost the collisions and the breakdown. Backs bordering on awful. Poorly organised. Startled chooks.
Aussie deserved to win by around 10 for me. We were lucky and on this performance are going to get a real hiding from someone soon unless we get over ourselves, play the best players in their rightful positions and concentrate on executing our core skills properly.
Was great to have test footy back though. Hope the team's performance on Sunday makes me look like a complete piston wristed gibbon for all the above

@Hooroo assume he is talking DMac?
Oh right. Did he have a bad game? I was pretty trashed and remember commenting that he was involved twice in the lead up to one of our tries but I don't remember cursing him

that was his best moment in the game. the rest was pretty average. he wasn't alone though.

TBH, I'm a bit sick of this living on 30 odd % possession malarkey.
Agreed - I want to see an All Black team squeeze the life out of the opposition. Brutally too.

Same, I thought we were moving that way in 2017 and 2018ish (I think). Had some really dominant forwards displays.
Then by 2019 - we'd moved back to the passive 'we'll live on your scraps and leave our destiny in your hands coz we don't really rate you but we'll score some cool tries on a good day' strategy.
You'd think we were selecting from a pool of tiny Japanese forwards, although the Japanese respect posession way more than us.
Or the opposition got better.
-
good points, alsom you'd think we'd kick for territory more, you can have the ball but only i your own 22...we seem to be happy for them to have the ball in our half

@barbarian the ref didnt make any particularly egregious decisions either way, because he didn't make any decisions.
There were so many things he could've pulled up in that final 8 minutes (from both sides) and he just let it all happen - which i suppose made it more entertaining, but certainly not something for the purists.
My guess is that he wanted to stay out of it, given that he's not exactly objective. I think that all in all, it was a reasonable approach, even though some things were missed (Va'ii turnover in the last few minutes probably one of them).

@chimoaus Aren't the tests against the Aussies in Australia also for the Bledisloe Cup?
Yeah, can someone tell me how the Bledisloe works with 4 games. Can we technically draw 1 more and lose 2 and still retain it. Don't the Aussies have to win 3 to win it? Or do we have to win at least twice?
No - if there are 2 draws and 2 Wallaby wins, it is ours, 2-nil.
The Bled is three games. I'm unsure if it is determined by points difference in the event of a draw and a win apiece or if the holder keeps it.
Sorry may be dumb question but are not all RC games part of the BC series?

There's a 4th Bledisloe after the 31st
7 November is the 4th Bledisloe.
That's what I thought

Apparently they are this year, but normally there's only an extra Bledisloe fixture outside of the Rugby Championship.

Yeah now both Oz and NZ need two wins out of the next three to take the Bled. Another draw and a win apiece means we keep it.
Adds a bit of spice and interest to it.

Congratulations Fozzie. You did something Henry or Hansen didn’t achieve and that is lose the first Bledisloe match against a new Wallabies coach.
Slow starters, new combos, inexperienced backline, silver linings, hope, the draw we needed to have
No - Robbie Deans won his first Bledisloe Cup match in 2008: 34-19 in Sydney.
Wasn’t that Deans first test against the ABs, and OZ won?
Yep it was.
Did you go to that test? I was in Sydney in the week leading up to it and was set to fly back to Melbourne on the Friday but ended having to stay for a few days extra. I didn’t want to go to the test so bunkered in at the hotel and watched nervously.
Some saying we got monstered on Sunday by the Wallabies and lacked mongrel, but on that Sydney night we were monstered. They targeted Nonu and he was knocked on his backside time after time.
Also some selections that raised some eyebrows - Tuitavake on the right wing. Rodders started as blindside. Kaino starting at 8. Conrad on the bench. Ellis starting
-
@ACT-Crusader Yep I was there. I was behind the posts.
That was a mess of a team - Daniel Braid starting at 7 with McCaw out injured and Braid had one of his anonymous games. Ellis had a shocker and it was clear as day Cowan had to start the next week.
Funnily I remember marvelling at how good Carter was that day - in a team getting smashed he was terrific - the ABs were actually in the match on the scoreboard until late where the Wallabies finally ran away with it but it was Carter keeping them in the game - without him the ABs would have got pumped on the scoreboard.

Joe Moody, Sam Cane and Aaron Smith were World Class. The rest of that starting team not so much on today's evidence.
Sotutu, Clarke and Jordan must all start next week. Dane Coles, TJP and George Bridge are injury cover now & past their best. Goodhue is a 13 not a 12.
Mostly agree but I want Reiko on the field on the wing.

We don't just try different combinations
many years ago we did have 20+ test matches in a row when we didnt have the same pair start before Nonu-Conrad became a fixture...
Maybe Ioane/Clarke can start on either wing, JB to FB and ALB-Goodhue in the mid-field
This, goddammit this!
Fizzle are you reading!
