That Chiefs loose forward trio is awesome. Hard to believe the loose forward trio they're playing against is even better.
Super rugby was awesome back then.

Shit Lauaki was a fucken tank.
RIP to him and JC.
-
@toddy and to think two of the players in that picture are no longer with us. RIP.
-
I remember seeing Sione Lauaki play when I went to my first ever professional rugby game when I was 12. Was Waikato vs Southland in 2007. Remember thinking what a beast he was.

Mils made some good points on the breakdown - how does Reece’s much more intentional hit get yellow but Dmac gets Red (and 3 weeks!) and that’s not even considering the Toomua shot.
Not sure on the Toomua one as I've only seen it once. But isn't there a few difference's between Sevu's and DMacs?
Sevu was making a tackle that started below the head on the ball carrier and then travelled up to contact with the head.
DMac ran in to shoulder charge/body check a player without the ball and clocked him clean in the face with his shoulder.
Sevu could always argue he was trying to make a tackle and a rugby incident occurred. DMac can only argue he was trying to take the Reds player out and accidentally hit his face, rather than his body.
That's a good point. On the other hand the Reece hit was pretty much straight to the head with impact. In terms of actual danger, I wonder which is worse, and in the modern game players run into each other all the time, so incidents very similar to the Dmac one get missed a lot (btw the way, I think the RC is justified, I just don't get the inconsistency).
I think Mils was making the point that there is a big difference between the two penalties, especially when Toomua got nothing for his (8:40 in the video).
From 6:45 here, you can the discussion about all three.

@bovidae
O'Neill was really tall. He played well against with the All Blacks against South Africa but being in a losing team did not help his cause. He did not have the career his physical attributes let expect. That statement sums it up. Bird was similar, and when he finally started to show promise, went overseas.
-
@stargazer said in Chiefs 2021:
@bovidae Didn't Bird also have some bad injuries along the way?
I think he did have a few injuries but was also given plenty of opportunities for the Chiefs. He did play very well in the game against Wales.

“They were giving me the name tag of ‘The Food Bill’ there for a wee while, because I didn’t play, and was just collecting all the kit.
Wasnt Ranby the one that phrase was coined for?
Jeez what a tough run, great he still has that desire though!!
-
@taniwharugby I honestly can't remember who that phrase started with. There has been a long list over the years.

It was at least Robin Brooke before that when he was injured 1994/1995ish.
-
@nepia at that point he wouldnt have been a 'foodbill' though was he, not being 'officially' paid and all.

Well obviously I didn't read any of the posts above so have no context for the discussion.
I think it was a tour to the NH when he maybe played half a game but stayed on tour (could be 100% wrong on that I just remember Zinny calling him that).
-
@nepia I'll take your word on it
-
ALB likely to have to be rested against the Tahs.
-
He's had a heavy workload, but the thought of running out a backline with no DMac or ALB in Sydney doesn't sound like much fun...

we can't make the final. we can't come last. we're playing our 4th game in Australia. Who actually cares? get some experience in to the kids.

Be nice to keep the Waratahs losing streak going though.

I think/hope we can get away with Tupaea and Nankivell.
I think Sullivan is also officially a midfielder if we want to go crazy ( @Bovidae is that right)
The biggest thing is getting the bench right - we dont want Tupaea finishing the game on the wing.
Up front, I really hope they sent over Moli, Ah Kuoi and Finau or none of it will matter...

I’m going to the game so I care.
Play ALB, he can rest next week 😉

@nepia Did you go to Leichhardt Oval?
Nope, annoyingly had something on at the time as both the time and getting to venue is much nicer than this weeks game at Brookvale.

This should be on the hawt thread

Is sowakula leaving?, I saw an article that he had resigned for next year but there is some rumours that he could be leaving and judging by one of his Instagram posts it could be true
-
But tough on Roe, thought he ended up being pretty good. No memory of even seeing Poihipi on the park!
-
@stargazer fair enough we will need the depth

Yeah, Poihipi's first and only start was for the Chiefs B team against the Blues. He had been a reserve in one match prior to that.
As I said above, Finau had the most impact from the rookies across SRA. Perhaps they didn't want to choose a WTG player. So Roe then.
