Finally managed to catch UFC 195 over the weekend. Watched it with my mother of all people, and she couldn't get enough of it either. Crazy sport!
 
I've still got a fair bit to learn about the submissions, but Rogan and co were going on a fair about the Ortega result - this was a fight probalby more for the purists, but hopefully with time I'll learn more about them, to understand exactly what happened here.
 
Miocic smashing of Arlovski was bloody impressive. Given what he also did to Mark Hunt, he must be next up to fight the winner of Velasquez vs Werdum 2.
 
but Lawler vs Condit - What. A. Fight. The fifth round was like nothing I've seen in boxing, probably since watching archive footage of Ali vs Frazier. A very hard fight to pick, as on points, surely, SURELY Condit should have won it. But if the fight had gone on a minute longer, I think Lawler would have taken it, as both were out on their feet by the end, but Lawler was all over him. 25 mins of fighting, but it passed in a flash, awesome.

Hendricks fought a terrible gameplan; once his one takedown attempt failed he just stood back in kicking range and let Thompson pick his shots. 
I'd love to see Thompson rematch Matt Brown next, or whichever of Condit/Woodley doesn't get the title shot. Thompson - Lawlor would be crazy, but I think Thompson is one fight off.

Was the card really that good? Just seemed like another Fight Night card when I looked at the card beforehand, so I didn't pay a whole load of attention to it.
 
Have to say I'm happy with Hendricks losing again. All the whining about a title shot back before he got one, backing out of TWO different out-of-competition drug tests that GSP paid for (and followed through with himself) and his constant excuses made him look like a piston wristed gibbon. I'm not surprised he started looking shit once the UFC started putting more of an emphasis on drug testing.

The world has moved on and Anderson isn't the fighter he was. ClichÃ©d but true. 
In saying that I'm still shocked Bisping won. The count has always been solid but not on Silva's level. He just wanted it more I guess. He's not sporting the mug of a guy who's won though. He got munted right up.

Anderson's the Roy Jones Jr of MMA. His speed and accuracy made him the best in the world but he was always going to fall off pretty quickly once he got old and slowed down. Father Time never loses.
 
Oh and the failed drug tests.
 
Good for Bisping though. I always felt bad for the guy because he'd manage to build up a run for the title but lose at the very last hurdle. Hope he finally manages to get a title shot one of these days.

I'm not sure Anderson's speed and accuracy have gone anywhere - he looked plenty fast and accurate against both Bisping and Diaz. What has gone is his chin and his killer instinct. 
The way he went down in the second wasn't pretty; Bisping hit him with a couple of solid shots but they weren't haymakers by any means and The Count is notoriously pillow-fisted. Anderson in his youth would have eaten those like toffee. Instead, he was knocked down and in serious trouble - reminiscent of the knockdown from the clinch in the second Weidman fight. 
In the fourth round, Bisping came out visibly wobbled and was pretty much out on his feet. All Anderson had to do was swarm him at the beginning of the round and he would have knocked him out. Instead, he took 4 minutes off and let Bisping secure the winning round. 
Those things are bad signs, and should point that it's time to retire IMO.

Some beautiful moves from Silva, but guts & go forward from Bisping.

No. [b]McGregor[/b]'s fight wasn't for the belt, seeing as it was in two weight classes above Featherweight, so he'll be fine. Can't see him going for the lightweight belt anytime soon though because if he couldn't beat Nate Diaz, he'll stand no chance against dos Anjos.
 
McGregor just tried way too much in the first round, so was pretty gassed going into the second round and Diaz capitalised. If he'd fought smarter, I think he would've won, but trying to go for the round one KO against someone in a higher weight class and with a good chin was dumb.
 
Holm/Tate, on the other hand, was an awesome fight. Holm dominated on the feet, Tate completely dominated on the ground. That rear naked choke in the fifth round was awesome. Sucks for Holm because he seems cool but I'm happy for Tate because she fought a really smart fight (unlike Ronda). Laughed at how pissed Dana was, what a dick.

UFC 196 showed me once again the unstoppable rise of the sport. Take me, as an example, didn't watch a single match of super rugby all weekend, but there was no way I was missing the 2 headline fights yesterday.
 
Holm losing to Tate is a bit of a blow to White for sure, as it takes the sting out of the Holm vs Rousey re-match. Rousey already beaten Tate twice, but this could open up an interesting 3-way tussle for the top spot over the next few months. The fight was ok, I wasn't as hyped about it as others, but the submission finish was pretty clinical.
 
McGregor vs Diaz was sensational. CMG was over confident, I'm not sure why, stepping up a couple of weight classes was always going to be tough. Diaz is hardly at the top of the tree, but he's tough as fuck, can take a punch and pretty technical with Jiu Jitsu. Round 1 was fascinating, as CMG was throwing out far too much, he's bloody quick,no doubt about it and you know if one oof his kicks connected to the head it was game over. But diaz rode his time, bounced around, kept him moving and did he best to stop the blood flow. The flush hit to CMG's chin, halfway through the second round changed it. You could see immediately that it properly hurt and that was it. Once he was on the ground he was toast. Totally awesome sport.

I see Peter Williams has questioned the legitimacy of mma as a sport this morning. 
Too much blood for his liking. Football, rugby and boxing all have measures in place to limit the blood and mma celebrates it. Took a massive swipe at the US, thier gun laws and even NFL. Forgetting that Japan, Brazil, Many European countries and Australia all have huge mma bases. 
It does take some getting used to. I was not an instant fan the first time I saw it in a sports bar in Brisbane in the late 90s. But Williams has criticised this from the wrong angle. Just sounds like an old man scared of the future.

It's a sport that is always going to divide people as it's so barbaric by nature. Yes, the blood ain't necessarily a good look, but reality it's kind of one of those is what it is things.
 
The fighters want to fight, the fans want to watch it ... can you imagine the havoc the likes of Diaz would cause on the city streets instead?

IMO, the focus on submissions and ground fighting makes it safer than many sports - obviously there's a bit of striking of the head, but it's better than boxing or American Football because concussions are rarer, and they get time off if they get KO'd.
