Heartland Championship - news

This was the Poverty Bay squad that played, today. IWL's younger brother in the starting line-up.
I was hoping they'd upload a highlights video on YT because this game was televised, but so far, nothing. Maybe the highlights will first be shown on Mainfreight Rugby.
Anyway, it was a game of two halves. The final score was
:::
Poverty Bay 38 - 41 Wanganui

Two Queen's Birthday matches have been announced. There may be more.
- Ngati Porou East Coast v Poverty Bay - Saturday 5 June 2021, k/o 2pm, Whakarua Park, Ruatoria
- Wairarapa Bush v Hawke's Bay Saracens - Monday 7 June 2021, k/o 2pm, Memorial Park, Masterton
The three Heartland provinces have announced their Queen's Birthday squads (to be reduced to a matchday squad):
-
@stargazer I notice Guildfords in the bush squad
-
You know your old when the coaches were in your year at college
-
@stargazer yeah I know I remember watching him on main freight rugby.
-
I notice Tolo Fahamokioa who has had runs for both Hawkes Bay and Wellington is down amongst the unavailable list for Bush.
-
Poor form signing Guildford again. I believe people deserve second chances and can change but his behaviour hasn't.
-
@yeetyaah You can also look at this from another angle. He has been doing really good work for the community (mental health & suicide prevention), esp for Maori men. Playing for Wai-Bush is another way for him to give back to the community he's part of. He's still a good player and he'll be good for the team. They'll be getting more out of this, than he does.
-
@stargazer cool and I'm glad to see that. But rugby obviously isn't doing favours for his mental health. He's had chances and wasted them. No way he deserves to represent a region in rugby.
-
@yeetyaah I think it's wrong to discus someone's personal mental health problems on this forum, so I won't respond to that, but I think the people at Wai-Bush will be at a better position to judge whether he deserves to represent them, than we do.
-
@stargazer what else is a forum for? We discuss everything else. But sure, I'll leave it.

Too bad for Ngati Porou East Coast that this wasn't a competition game, because it would have ended their long losing streak. They beat Poverty Bay 28 - 19 (HT: 23 - 14). I only saw part of the game, but NMS scored at least one try.
In the other game, North Otago was too strong for King Country: 27 -19 (HT: 19 - 14).

Great to see players go back to their home province!
New Zealand sevens star Andrew Knewstubb to play for Horowhenua-Kāpiti
New Zealand Sevens representative Andrew Knewstubb will be named at centre in the Horowhenua-Kāpiti rugby team to play West Coast at Greymouth on Saturday.
Knewstubb, who turns 26 today, played his schoolboy rugby for Paraparaumu College and was a Horowhenua-Kāpiti age-grade representative, so he had always harboured hopes of one day playing for Horowhenua-Kāpiti.
His old brother Corey had played for Horowhenua-Kāpiti at halfback in 2008.
"I want to take this opportunity because I might never get the chance again," he said.Knewstubb would be available for only the first few Heartland games before taking up NZ seven commitments again, but said he hoped to contribute and learn as much as he could in that time.
I haven't seen a final squad list for Horo-Kap, but the training squad has a few familiar names in it:
-
@stargazer Might make them competitive this year, the only silverware I’ve seen them win was the Lochore cup a few years ago.
-

@stargazer geez surprised Knewstubb couldn't/didn't get a gig with 1st division team. He should carve up here.
-
Well, well, well. Look @Stockcar86 @Nepia @Higgins @Number-10 who's wearing the 4-jersey for East Coast!!
By the way, I noticed there's a Jacob Lowe in the West Coast squad. Coincidence and just someone with the same name, or is that the brother of Karl and Jonah?
