@Gunner imagine a back 3 with Ranger, Caucau and Berryman! Be entertaining, likely more good than bad!
True. Well worth the price $20 terrace ticket.

Also both of the Dunn brothers were fine players in their day but I think you're stretching it to suggest they're both good enough to block Holwell right out of the squad
Both All Blacks...
True, but if they had been playing in Mehrts's then Dan Carter's era they probably wouldn't have been, which was Holwell's curse.

is tough when you have some players you are basing your veiw on what you have read or what other people who saw them play said.
Johnny SMith a prime example (I admit I knew little about him, other than he played for North Auckland and AB's)
Named in Wynne Grays 100 Greatest ABs...

Based on that, he'd have to be in the team then.

I've known about JB since I was a boy as I had lots of old rugby books and he was a great Maori centre. I think he'd make every list of 100 greatest ABs.

@taniwharugby it's a really tough call as I didn't see Morgan play.
Morgan played a record 165 games for Northland and 5 ABs games.
Jack has already played more ABs matches (though 14 v 5 is not significantly more) and there will be many more to come.Right now - I think Goodhue misses out.
If we have this debate in another few years, Jack may well get his nose in front. -
OK, so looking like team pretty much picks itself aside from a few positions?
1 - Con Barrell (Northland/North Auckland Caps - 77, AB's - 4 matches, 0 tests)
2 - Whitcombe (20,5) Sloane (146, 1)
3 - Richie Guy (91, 4)
4 - Ian Jones (66, 79)
5 - Glenn Taylor (143, 1)
6 - Norm Maxwell (38, 36)
7 - Gus Collins (114, 0)
8 - Peter Jones (79, 37)
9 - Sid Going (110, 29)
10 - David Holwell (115, 0)
11 - Rupeni Caucau (21, 0)
12 - Johnny Smith (41, 4)
13 - Jack Goodhue (9, 14)
14 - Rene Ranger (88, 6)
15 - Warren Johnstone (161, 0) Jared Payne (36, Ire 20) Norm Berryman (107*, 1)As above, I'd be inclined to play Taylor as the lock, and Maxwell at 6 to give a bit more grunt at scrumtime, I'd like Berryman in there too, but he'd have to go to push out Johnny Smith (and Goodhue to 12) or go to 15, so not sure he can start
Although is an argument Goodhue could go to Canterbury having played more for them than us...although thye'd probably just loan him out to Ta$man
Who would be Captain? Glenn Taylor? Whitcombe?
*Honors board says Berryman played 107 times for Northland, but I found an article after he died stating 75...

Berryman on the wing, Ranger to 12 and Goodhue stays at 13?

I'd go for Taylor. He was massive in leading that late 90's side
