Also, Mehrts wasnt' bad to be fair.
Never won anything at test level. Ridiculously overrated player in NZ. Not rated anywhere else.
1995: Choke
1996: Culhane and Preston won the series
1997: Spencer dominance
1998: Lost every game
1999: Destroyed at the world cupStephen Jones likes him though

It's pretty clear that the only good South Island AB loose forward of the professional era was Richie McCaw.
Sounds like someone never saw Rueben Thorne do anything of note in an AB jersey.
Then again none of us did either.

Will we see any of this biff again? How much would that shot on Donnelly (0.21) get in this day and age?
I saw nothing wrong with any of that.

Love that Coles was the first in.

At least there won't be a jersey colour clash.
Nah the games in Welly, so South will be wearing their really dark grey away strip...

My five least favourite Rugby people from the South Island.
- Justin Marshall. Arrogant bastard. Talks so much sh#t he must be drowning in the stuff.
- Laurie Mains. All the charm of Thunderbird puppet. Threw away the 1995 World Cup by not employing a proper chef.
- Alex Wylie. Dirty thug. Always miserable. Outfoxed in 1991 by Bob Dwyer.
- Bryon Kelleher. A man with no shame.
- Todd Blackadder. Even less personality and presence than The Suitcase.
Up the North!

South Island coaches were so bad in that era.that Marty Brooke missed out on the ABs to Chris Tregasgis, and Zinzan Brooke, the most dominant NZ player of the 90s, got overlooked for Aaron Shithouse Pene.
Always amazed me that Laurie Mains never picked Duane Monkley for the ABs in the early 1990s when he was perhaps the best player in the world at the time.
