@gt12 well I'm an optimist, if that's really the right term for not caring if someone clicks a link to an article you don't really care about 🤔

This is a direction I would like to see

Have a local competition (like super rugby Aotearoa) to kick the year off (preferable starting in March) but then have a cross over games.

Options are maybe a pool knockout type competition with various teams like
-Including NZ Aust PI and two Japanese teams (similar time zones)
-Add in SA and or the Celtic nations

    • look at a global competition say once every 4 years, Say 48 teams (or more) with 12 pools of 4 teams. Home and away and the winners plus 4 advance to a knockout final. Or whatever is possible, unsure if the UK and France teams would be up for this but image a final with the Blues verse Saracens for example

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/300094568/super-rugby-crusaders-boss-optimistic-of-crossover-matches-with-aussies-next-year

“There's probably more momentum and more flexibility in the system now because of Covid than there ever has been. My sense is there is a real possibility of something globally happening in the next two or three years, which could be replicable every two to four years after,” he said.

“Covid will pass, and when Covid passes and borders open again, and they will open again and trade will pick up again and people will want to connect and do business. I think there is a real opportunity for a tight, well-run localised comps, feeding into European style championships, and then the next natural step is something global.”

My view is the super 8 is an idiotic suggestion. any competition should involve all teams. Not just a top 8

I agree with these comments from Marinos but you can't turn back the clock now.

“But I guess my view on this is that I think over time we’ve tended to try and make Super Rugby the solution for domestic rugby in our markets, as opposed as to what it was initially set out to be.

“That was to provide a blockbuster top-end, very quick, short and impactful competition structure, that complemented the domestic structure in each of the countries, not took over the domestic structures.”

during super 12 i always remember the NPC being the touted as the strong foundation that super rugby and then the international game was built on

and up to a couple of years ago, it was. It's responsible for generating the ridiculous amount of talent we produce, a lot of which winds up offshore in some way shape or form I suspect. But - it's like the Aussie domestic cricket competition, high quality begets high quality. You don't make it to the top in NZ rugby without being a bit special.

Take away a strong domestic comp, and the competitions start to suffer, players don't get tested so much.

I also think he's spot on, that Super 18 was a shocker. Damning on those involved the last time around, who wanted expansion at all costs.

@Bovidae I agree wholeheartedly with those comments as well. NZR have probably contributed to fucking it as they assumed bigger meant more cash so allowed ill-conceived growth, Rugby Australia fucked it by adding more crap teams because they wanted SR to effectively be their domestic comp which otherwise would be shite, and SA fucked it via a combination of the two ie adding shit sides and going for a cash grab.

Then it got so long and big it required numerous bye weeks, staggered starts to accommodate tours, the conference system , a contrived finals structure and my personal fucking favourite: All Black rest weeks.

And boom, we all fucked it in the asshole.

Oh and it's ludicrous length created a stupid international window, and encroached on the domestic rugby season. There were seasons when teams like Canterbury couldn't start at full strength because they had to rest players who'd had heavy SR workloads.

SR players being rested from provincial rugby, All Blacks being rested from SR, and All Blacks being rested from fucking All Black rugby. It's all a great big fuck up.

The Australian newspaper reporting a trans Ta$man comp in 2022 with 5 each from Aus & NZ.

Potentially with a Japanese team and a Pacific team to make a Super 12.

    Great.
At least 10 games that I won't bother to watch and more than 20 hours that won't be wasted.

No different to Super Rugby Aotearoa only watching a couple of games a week.

@Kiwiwomble Com' on. You cared about the competition in 2015 didn't you?

Agree about the format. That has been the biggest problem.

That should get the fans back. High quality rugby with the Force, Sunwolves and the Drua.

@Snowy yeah, i was meaning my real annoyances came from the overly complicated format, weird times zones etc....never really got annoyed on the rare occasion the landers thrashed someone....probably didn't happen enough to get old
