It is already more than that. Big box pay tv (i.e. Foxtel) is not long for this world as a significant player. They've had to cannibalise their old business model to even stay in the game.
Subsequently for Rugby Australia—already at a low point—any near-term domestic tv deal for next year will be going south, not north.
That means (a) stripping out costs; and (b) looking to alternate funding sources. In terms of the latter, private equity will need to be part of that.
Surprisingly, given rugby is such a second-rate sport in Aus, there are actually interested parties with money out there.

But, I don't envy them.
Conferences, inter-hemisphere , plenty of the problems Super Rugby had - except for timezones.
Yep. Throw in expansion, diluting the product and you have the "Average 18" all over again. At least this time the expansion teams are from a different country, but that didn't really go well for the Sunwolves. They could ditch a couple of weaker teams too, but again that wasn't very popular with some.

This is a direction I would like to see
Have a local competition (like super rugby Aotearoa) to kick the year off (preferable starting in March) but then have a cross over games.
Options are maybe a pool knockout type competition with various teams like
-Including NZ Aust PI and two Japanese teams (similar time zones)
-Add in SA and or the Celtic nations- look at a global competition say once every 4 years, Say 48 teams (or more) with 12 pools of 4 teams. Home and away and the winners plus 4 advance to a knockout final. Or whatever is possible, unsure if the UK and France teams would be up for this but image a final with the Blues verse Saracens for example
“There's probably more momentum and more flexibility in the system now because of Covid than there ever has been. My sense is there is a real possibility of something globally happening in the next two or three years, which could be replicable every two to four years after,” he said.
“Covid will pass, and when Covid passes and borders open again, and they will open again and trade will pick up again and people will want to connect and do business. I think there is a real opportunity for a tight, well-run localised comps, feeding into European style championships, and then the next natural step is something global.”

I agree with these comments from Marinos but you can't turn back the clock now.
“But I guess my view on this is that I think over time we’ve tended to try and make Super Rugby the solution for domestic rugby in our markets, as opposed as to what it was initially set out to be. “That was to provide a blockbuster top-end, very quick, short and impactful competition structure, that complemented the domestic structure in each of the countries, not took over the domestic structures.” -

during super 12 i always remember the NPC being the touted as the strong foundation that super rugby and then the international game was built on
