NPC v Super Rugby

@Hooroo I suggested earlier to shorten the comp by scratching cross-over games. That's as far as I would want to go. The unions in the Championship need the income, too, and their SR players and ABs need to play.
Everyone needs the income so that is a mute point.
I would assume they would be allowed to loan their AB's to the playing provinces.

@Hooroo Yeah, nah.
If this scenario would happen, I'd boycot all games and rather watch the replays on my MySky.
But that doesn't matter. In a time with no sport, only a small % would be like you. Everyone else would be hanging out for something to watch.
Its worth an email to NZRU a an option, I think. (Have too much time on my hands obviously)
-
It'd have to be a full round-robin, and six team finals series. No byes required so this would take 16 weeks. It could theoretically start Friday July 31st and finish Saturday Nov 14th. This is only two weeks later than the NPC used to finish, and assuming there's no EOYT, then why not go into November?
Provincial squads at full strength - or better than full strength if NH contracted players are able to play - playing in good weather come October (ala Feb and March in SR) would draw fantastic crowds and would be a wonderful panacea for many unions and NZR.
-
So the ABs won't be playing this season?
The July tests and RC won't happen if players from both hemispheres aren't playing regularly beforehand and there are still international travel restrictions in place. The ABs would only go on an EOYT if they had a revenue sharing agreement in place to replace lost income from cancelled domestic tests.
-
@Bovidae I don't think any decision about EOYTs has been made, but some European countries may take much longer to recover from COVID19 than experts in the South expect it to last over here.
Btw, I've seen suggestions from Australia - not sure who posted them - to have a 5-test Bledisloe Cup at the end of the year, if Northern EOYTs aren't possible, but trans- Ta$man tests are feasible. Three in Oz, two in NZ. Might be worth considering. Maybe add a test against Fiji.
-
@Stargazer No decision has been made about the July tests and RC either, at least that have been made public. You can bet the respective unions are having regular discussions about the different scenarios but it is such a fluid situation that will be unique to each country, so they can't make any plans.

I’m busy at work at the moment (stupid CV making me having to work harder), but once done I’m going to email NZR saying not to trust letters from dudes named Hooro.

If the NPC did start, I would keep it smaller and just restrict it to the Premiership teams and keep the Championship teams out of it. That would create less travel and onus on the actual NPC costs and you would still get a great TV viewership.
I don't think that is an option. It's either safe to have the competition (and if it is why not have the full thing) or it isn't safe and there shouldn't be any rugby at all. I don't think there will be something in between.

Revenue. I can't see how the Championship adds any.

I think it will add plenty in 2020 with people struggling for live sport. There will be no other local sport on. Maybe overseas sport will have started again, maybe not. If it was just the Premiership then you only have an 8 week competition when it could be twice as long and deliver more revenue.
SKY have nothing on so would love to be able to have NPC on 4 days a week.

Paying Sky customers from those 7 provinces would disagree. There will be many on here who wouldn't bother watching if their team wasn't involved.

Presumably those people watch anyway and yet it costs the NZR to run the comp.

given the announcement made a few days ago, if we see any rugby this year, I expect it wil be the same teams involved in the NPC last year, but hopefully with the additon of ABs.

so Northland would be even further behind?

@mariner4life you know what, if I get to see my team run around later this year, with our solitary AB, I'l be stoked, we had a great season last time he was involved, so who knows...
