NZR Statement
Postponement of Community Rugby in line with Alert Levels
Community and club rugby is postponed until COVID-19 alert levels are once again at a safe level for sport, in line with Ministry of Health guidance. Further clarification was necessary given the initial postponement of all matches, training and face-to-face education courses was until Saturday, 18 April. Given the subsequent nationwide Alert Level 4 lockdown, providing a specific start date for rugby is now unrealistic. We continue to monitor the situation and take advice from the government about when it will be safe for rugby and all sports to start. We will take our lead from the Ministry of Health. In the meantime, New Zealand Rugby, our Provincial Unions, clubs and secondary schools are working hard to make sure when we get the green light, we’re ready for rugby. The postponement of winter sport will be felt by many, but the wellbeing and safety of our rugby community is paramount. We don’t want our players, coaches, referees or supporters to be at risk. We also want to do what’s right for New Zealand and we ask everyone involved in rugby to support one another and follow the official government guidelines. Rugby plays an important role in New Zealand communities and at this time of uncertainty the postponement of rugby allows everyone to pause, and take care of themselves and their whanau. It also gives Provincial Unions and local competition organisers the opportunity to regroup, reschedule and determine how they can deliver meaningful competition when rugby resumes. -
Rugby begins preparation phase for return of community game
Rugby clubs around the country can start a three-stage approach to getting back on the grass with training potentially beginning later this month.
NZR's comprehensive guidelines incorporating necessary hygiene and distancing measures for all levels of rugby (Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa is excluded) will be released on Thursday, 14 May. The guidelines are subject to change in accordance with Ministry of Health’s updated advice.
NZR Head of Participation Steve Lancaster said Rugby would take a measured approach introducing three distinct phases of preparation to ensure clubs were clear about the stringent health and safety protocols required to enable players, coaches and referees to lace up their boots for 2020.

A short season in the Waikato. Play each other once, no promotion from Division 1 to Premier this year. A lot of Prem B teams were struggling and half the Division 1 clubs are not running a B team. Good to get out and about today. Junior rugby starts after school holidays, going ten weeks. My sons team organised a pre season game today, my son loved being back at it.

@dogmeat I thnk Covid has had a big impact, whether it is the death knell is another story.
I had heard of clubs up here, had 'normal' numbers for pre-season (pre-covid) but with the season starting last weekend, plenty of players havent come back.
I guess some have lost jobs, some working longer hours to make up for last few months and rugby is taking a back seat.
So hopefully this year wil lbe an anomoly and most clubs will return to 'normal' next year.

@dogmeat Unfortunately, North Harbour club rugby has been steadily declining for years. Glenfield have had trouble fielding teams, and, IIRC, have been prem 2 for a while. Blowouts against Mahurangi are the norm. The marist result is a bit of a shock though.
It's gotten worse this year, with more teams struggling to fill their grades.
The demographic changes at traditional rugby schools hasn't helped (basketball is huge in schools), nor has Harbour losing it's status as a super rugby base and top tier province.
