AFL 2021

@mariner4life And that's the heart of this whole debate. It's so interesting, because it cuts right to the heart of what sport is in 2021.
Tassie is a no-brainer from a passion standpoint. Slightly more questionable from a talent standpoint, but if money was no object they'd have a team tomorrow. BUT despite the AFL raking in billions of dollars every year, money is still a massive part of their decision making process.
-
Tassie should have a side, agreed. But commercially is it viable? Does it add to the AFL? Developmentally, the kids play Aussie Rules there anyway and move to the mainland if they're good enough so nothing to be gained there. Does a Tasmanian side draw crowds in other states? I'd say probably in the traditional football states but not NSW and QLD where the best crowds come out to see their team play the clubs with more history.
And then, the biggest question for me is, would the AFL be more likely to grant a licence to a Greenfields club ala Adelaide, or a local team looking to expand ala Port? -
I lived in hobart in 1989, used to watch Clarence and went to a match between tassie and Victoria and back then there was talk and willingness for tassie to have a vfl team. At that time the swans and Brisbane bears were in the vfl and were absolutely pants. Got hammered week in week out if I recall. Tassie was a ridgy didge footy state.
You guys have it right. The willingness for Tasmanians to have a team in the national comp has never wavered for 30 years that i know of but the AFL won't make it happen surely for financial and ROI reasons.
As barb mentioned, talk is cheap, platitudes even cheaper. -
And to top a great day the Lions pump the Cats.
Geelong are a dirty whinging side. Nice to flog them

We’re back!

They played well, helped by Richmond being absolutely awful. King kicking a couple of tough ones early was good for his confidence
Tigers need a massive reversal for a run at the flag now.
-
I've only seen extended highlights on top of score updates last night but Essendon challenged the Dees for most of their game last night it seems. At one stage the Dees were 1 and 6 so maybe we could have blitzed them early and missed a trick, or maybe they were all tough kicks?

Dews job in jeopardy now surely

They play a good style the Suns, but it’s high risk too. They were getting through the middle with some regularity.

yeah, if he can get those guys to ignore the scoreboard and stick to the plan they could real dangerous real fast.
Interesting people saying this loss ended Richmond's flag tilt. Not sure it's quite that drastic. i still expect them to sneak in to the 8. And then it's the same equation as it was 2 weeks ago. Win 4 finals. Probably all played at the MCG. Sure, it will take a significant form reversal, but they aren't dead yet.
Was Mrs Hardwick the real brains of the operation?

Injuries ruin any title run. Best Richmond can hope for here is to ruin other team's hopes.

Got the TB on the AFL as going out and avoiding the ABs until I get home.
Am astonished at the crowd or lack thereof for the Crows IN Adwlaide, although on reflection I shouldn't be.
Whilst they're playing crap they usually get a decent crowd.
This would have to be the smallest home crowd I've ever seen for them.
-
Whoop whoop, big win for the Saints against Brissy.
Yay we kicked more goals than behinds!
-
Just caught the last 5 minutes of that Suns and Giants game, a comedy of errors from both sides. Giants the main culprits and it cost them.
Lot’s of talkback that Richmond are officially cooked for 2021.
They are 12th but only a game out of the 8. Their run home is - Brisbane, Geelong, Freo, North, Giants, Hawks.
They could easily scrape in, but the way they are playing isn’t great. Their defensive pressure is almost non-existent.
-
Brad Hill should be dropped for next week. Useless.
Port get us in a close one.
Top 8 slipping away.

I only lasted until quarter time due to a combination of illness and self-inflicted illness, but I'd seen enough at that stage to feel Melbourne were going to win handsomely over Hawthorn. Got a shock to see this morning that it ended in a 79-all draw. Our litany of losses or poor results against poor sides continues this season.
