What is it about AFL that excites you guys?
.... But everything in between is so ugly to watch. The scrappyness, the randomness, ... It's just a really ugly game, made worse by playing it for 4 bloody 30min quarters!!!
What am I missing???Soon after 2000 a mate had a couple of us up to the Gabba to watch Brisbane Lions play as the champions they were before a full house, with an injured Michael Voss appearing intermittently and watching the team lift every time he came on. It was a magnificent spectacle viewed from up high, electric. The game is not near as exciting now.
It could be worse - try watching AWFL with its air swings and 5½ yard long kicks and pretend blokes spitting and swearing and trying ever so hard to swagger. And goal umpires nodding off to sleep. The fans are told that they love it and are right behind it. It is deemed r8cist to disagree.

@voodoo love? No. But I enjoy it more than league.
And having lived in Adelaide you couldn't help but follow it.
And when you've got a dog in the fight you've got an interest in the outcome.
There's plenty of sports around that others are into that I'm not, or at least am less interested in for various reasons: league, NFL, basketball, baseball, soccer - I'll still watch at times but am not invested in.
I'm not as attuned to it as @mariner4life. Can only see what's happening around the ball: don't ask me about tactics, strategies, set-up, patterns of play or anything.
And I get it often looks like a game between Uruguay and Georgia at the 2003 RWC: a heap of random kicking, interspersed with multiple knock ons.
But it's not quite like that and the skill level is huge in terms of their ability to pin point a kick 40m to a bloke they just spotted out of the corner of their eye.

@booboo I'm about the same as you. I was a hater until immersed in the sport loving in Melbourne. With no Foxtel in our flat as the other guys weren't really into sport, I started watching a lot of AFL.
I couldn't explain tactics or some of the games' nuances, but appreciate the game and it's rules.
There's more to it than the occasional spectacular mark or difficult goal. I personally love seeing a team surge forward from defence, putting a series of quality forward kicks and/or handballs together and setting up in scoring position. Equally, I can be aghast when other teams do the same to mine. But it's easy on the eye.
Sure, a dropped pass or kick and scrap for the ball on the ground can look ugly, but so does a ruck to the casual rugby observer.

Why? He's been saved the spectacle of his team losing. I've been denied more wins!

Good. Saints showed today that they are already building for 2021....

What is it about AFL that excites you guys? Because I can't stand the game. Everyone admits it's crap on TV, but I've been to 5 live games (not many I'll admit) including a sold out MCG, but it's not much better for me.
What are the things you love about it? I can appreciate a great climbing mark, or a long kick for goal. But everything in between is so ugly to watch. The scrappyness, the randomness, the constant chipping between full forward and defenders, presumably because they're both so bored. It's just a really ugly game, made worse by playing it for 4 bloody 30min quarters!!!
What am I missing???
I think it was one of the most purely athletic sports. The game flows very well. In rugby if someone drops the ball it is 90 seconds out for a scrum. AFL is a game for all sizes.
AFL still isn't my favourite sport and I find the games a bit long but I do prefer it to the NRL. The A-league isn't too exciting either if the Phoenix aren't playing or it isn't a rivalry.

Comparing it favourably to the A league is hardly a glowing recommendation...
Does it really flow? Yeah the whistle might not go, but the content is so damn messy
I know non-fans bag the whistle time in rugby but i dont mind some of it . Chance to refill the beer/wine, whinge about the call, post an update on the Fern to those without coverage etc

Aaah not quite.
Have to be quite skinny to play Strayan roolz. Can't be carrying any extra weight.
I'm not talking fatties, just talking solidly built blokes without fast twitch fibres.
Karl Tu'inukuafe is not about to play much AFL.
No room for endomorphs in that game.

I saw the photos yesterday and didn't believe it

Dean needs to be involuntarily incarcerated. I hope he gets the help he needs.
-
There were rumours going around quite some time ago he had some unusual traits ,
But bloody hell , I didn’t expect it to be true.

Is there a serious substance abuse issue amongst AFL head coaches? This is like the third or fourth allegation in the past few years that was serious enough to become a police matter?
I hope this guy gets the help he needs, seems pretty average form from the police involved there.

Some of the coaches you wouldn’t think so,
Probably a reflection on what is going on in society in general. speaking to a copper i know last week , they see some weird stuff , particularly right now , domestic problems have gone through the roof, people you would not expect, on ice
While Im here , I’m a self employed tradie, the job I’ve just finished , had Paul Roos , Nick Riewoldt, Brendan Goddard ( and the ch 10 weather man ) all within 100 metres .
Just started another job and Scott Pendlebury is a neighbour
