learnt a new plane related word today: Snarge
The residue smeared on an airplane after a bird/plane collision.
Additional Information
The DNA test on the snarge showed it was a pigeon.Apparently is military slang and not an official word
-
@Machpants possibly, google tells me it was submitted to become an official word in 2012...
is used here too, and references the bird strike

Did anyone here ever actually see this? @Hooroo ?
Yeah man. They used to do them at most Air Shows/Open days.
I believe we were the first to do the Plugged Barrell roll (But I may be incorrect)
Unfortunately we lost a really good pilot and good guy too in a practise session. Name escapes me right now

Do you have the book about our a4s ? There’s a bit in there about the only time they fired a shot in anger . It was in the path of a boat that that had been spotted illegally fishing in NZ waters . Boat wasn’t hit, no one was hurt but the story got exaggerated in the retelling overseas until the story became NZ Air Force sinks fleeing illegal fishing vessel which discouraged poaching for quite a while.

Ha no, I don't but have heard that story. It was supposed to be over the bow if I remember correctly and the pilot "Accidently" hit the boat.

@taniwharugby said in Planes:
I don't know how nervous I would be? I am always more nervous on take off than landing as I know they have all that power to go to in case something goes wrong on decent.
Not so much spare power when taking off.

PAH - Pretty standard Wellington landing......
Funnily enough, worst one I've had was in Dublin. Fun watching out my window at the approaching runway. City airport can be pretty dicey on the descent eh, have had some massive, prolonged shuddering and jolts a few times there.

@Snowy would have the pilots manually landed that??
Yes. Autoland limits in an A340 were 30 head, 20 cross, 10 tail. It won't be much different in an A380 (25 cross, I think) and that was way greater than a 25kt x-wind so has to be done manually. It was also too turbulent to use auto land.
He actually made a mess of that and didn't "kick out" the drift before touchdown which puts large sideloads on the main undercarriage. it is pretty hard to get it spot on though. Some large aircraft with steerable main bogeys will line the wheels up down the runway (to an extent) by using the ILS beam, even though the fuse is crabbed. This relieves the side load and means the pilot doesn't have to time his rudder input so well. C5 has this I think. 747s and probably 777 too.
