I enjoyed the game, good to see normal service resume as the ABs took the cane out of the cupboard and gave the Irish a damn good thrashing.

A master stroke, using newish wings - it usually takes years to build decent defences to them, and in the meantime, their try scoring rate is huge. Seems to be the common theme of AB wings - they stay relevant for a while and then most of them get worked out.

That’s a really good point about the wings . In 2011 we had Kahui and Jane and 2015 we had NMS and Savea . All had pretty short shelf lives .

6 days to get back into shit-your-pants-about-England mode.

Losing to England wouldn’t be anywhere near as intolerable as losing to Ireland. Particularly if we didn’t deny Ireland their traditional quarter final exit

Yeah but nah. I will despise losing to England, they crow badly enough when they draw with us

@Luigi except he also said he came from offside, which he wasnt, unless he had to stand a certain distance behind the tryline....the clumsy attempt to tackle, block not withstanding

Not really sure what Matt Todd could do there?

    Tackle?

Exactly. It ain’t about intent anymore. Or even it being an accident. If you’re in the way, flailing around like a epileptic squid you’re gonna get pinged. Todd got sent off for being a muppet. Can’t even claim cynicism, just rubbishness.

What's that got to do with Owen's explaining the card with " never onside" ?

He's directly responsible for both of Ireland's tries. His YC was deserved - you're supposed to tackle.

Please explain to me the rule that Todd broke? He was inside, the vision clearly showed that. He did not make shoulder or arm contact with the irish player's head. It was at best a collision I would have thought? Honest question

@KiwiMurph was another pathetic no arms tackle/hit at the end of the 1st half....but he said he was also offside.

Neither penalty worthy, let alone a YC and PT.

After he had stopped play for judging and explaining never onside. It was a poor piece of refereeing and use of tmo.

Watching the replay Owens was very poor but will escape scrutiny because the match was a one sided thrashing.

Ireland has the worst fans in game , I’m not saying I’d be cool losing to the poms but losing to the Irish would be awful . Imagine the likes of BOD afterwards .

@Siam yea he made some poor decisions by his standards, more akin to what I'd expect from Garces, fortunately none of them were game affecting, for us or them.

    @canefan
IIRC, Owens said Todd made no attempt to tackle or go for the ball. Obstruction?

At first there was the offside call and then towards the end of the back and forth he said Todd didn’t attempt to use arms or wrap.

So what is intriguing is if he overturned the offside call he made onfield after the replay?

The neck roll incident on Ardie could have been serious if he wasn't such a meast. Compare that to the one Owens pinged us for, I defy any of these NH hacks to say we get all the calls

@canefan Irish 5 in the side of a wedge rolling maul was another fundamental decision all referees decided to ignore - you can't say they missed it.

The one thing Owens did a little better than Garces IMHO was police the offside line (either that or the Irish didn't try to push the limit as much as the English). It is heartening to note that we didn't get a lot of the calls go our way (I haven't seen an official penalty count but the second half seemed to go against us more often than not) and yet it didn't stop us from beating them down

@Siam I hate how you can be part of a maul from the start, work your way through, end up on the side, nek minut you are pinged (think Ardie got done for one of them)
