@mariner4life more the way they tackle, the defensive line in NFL is typically more structured too, I'd say they'd be better able to slot into a League defensive pattern much easier, but still need to learn how to tackle properly that wouldnt see them sin-binned.
I remember reading Seattle Seahawks were moving toward rugby style tackling several years ago in order to increase safety.
It also turned out to increase effectiveness.

not to mention fitness
I would argue there's a genetic element to that too. Different sports encourage different sorts of genetic freaks.
In sevens you're constantly going up and down from peak effort to moderate effort. Can an athlete who is a genetic freak in short bursts develop the same engine as Curry?
They'd have to love not carrying around 10kg of padding and helmet tho.

France only just hold out Fiji, 12-5 not a bad game to be honest, very tough womens match

Am glad for Fiji though, it's always nice to see a minnow come through and claim some Olympic glory
Fiji ain't no minnow
-
@dogmeat I meant minnow as more in Fiji are a very small country rather than a reflection on their 7's ability.
Simply put Fiji's only realistic chance of a medal at these games was in the 7's so the whole country would have been hanging on that. The fact it's a gold medal is just, well - nice

@taniwharugby tackle? The fuck do you think linebackers and safeties do all season? Read plays and make tackles.
I think you're grossly underestimating the difference.
What most people like this Zach clown is missing is that NFL rewards specificity. Quite different to 7s.

I'm not actually. If you took the 12 most suited NFL players and put them in the Olympic 7s they would get reemed. Like, Namibia in the 2003 RWC reemed. Record scores reemed.
In 12 months not so much. There are a lot of transferable skills. Ruby ain't that fucking complicated, Rugby 7s even less so.

They had Waisale Serevi brought in as a specialist coach.

Ha. Didn't know that. As fantastic as he was, defence wasn't exactly his forte, or was he bought in for something else?

I honestly think it would take longer. The NFL is the cream of a wide pyramid playing american football for over a decade.
If the money was the same you'd see a very different picture, but it would also attract the best OS athletes to 7s as well.

It was for tackling.
Waisale Serevi is renowned for incredible attacking skills which earned him the tag as the world’s greatest sevens player, but the Seahawks have recently been making use of his rugby knowledge to improve their tackling. Serevi runs a rugby school in Seattle, and has been invited to Seahawks training this season by coach Pete Carroll to help give last year’s NFL champions an edge. Carroll is an unabashed fan of rugby’s tackling technique and after guiding Seattle to the Super Bowl in 2014, he released a 20-minute video with footage of NFL and rugby spliced together to explain his philosophy. Enter Serevi. As Seahawks assistant coach Rocky Seto explained earlier in the season: “We had this guy show up. Coach Carroll met him through the team. “I thought what a perfect guy to meet and talk about (tackling). I drove across the bridge to downtown Seattle to meet Serevi and he was gracious enough to spend a couple of ours talking to me about the tackling principles of rugby. “It totally fits. Our game was born out of your game so it makes perfect sense.”

Thing is we're not getting a lot of contest at ruck time, which won't help when we're up against better teams later on.
