Magpies v Wellington

From memory you can't make sudden movements on penalty kicks. Refs occasionally tell players to stay still.
I have said this for years but nothing in rugby....literally nothing annoys me more than a halfback taking a quick tap. My research shows that in the 1000 studied 750 resulted in a turnover from isolation or a stuff up, 200 resulted in a loss of the potential gain a simple kick would have provided. 49 ended up neutral to what the better option would have been and 1 paid off.

This is from the WR Law Book
LAW 20 Penalty and free-kick
OPPOSING TEAM AT A FREE-KICK
16. As soon as the kicker initiates movement to kick, the opposing team may charge and try
to prevent the free-kick being taken by tackling the kicker or to block the kick. -
Good game to watch. ACT Jnr and I were watching and found ourselves even cheering for the Shield Snorters late in the 2nd half to come back.
But we were a bit disappointed they didn’t go for the win but 3 points is a good result.
Impressed with the Lions forwards, but Shield Snorters backs really came to the fore when they needed to.

@Stargazer surely that must be a kick for touch. Can't take a shot on a free kick

I’m extra angry with the result this morning. I actually had a fear last week that we’d concentrate too much in the forwards and we’d come unstuck when playing a team with a decent pack.
We have talented young backs, let’s use them. I do wonder whether Fakatava didn’t feel confident to overrule his forwards and go to the backs. At the very least as soon as advantage was called the ball should have gone to the backs. Grrrrr.
My mate who was at a work function was following on Tribe notifications and they didn’t actually say we got the last penalty kick. It wasn’t until mid morning today that he realised we hadn’t lost.

@Nepia I just re-watched the game - made some extensive notes (more later) - and McClutchie was giving very clear instructions to Fakatava, but Fakatava never got his hands on the ball. Forwards being forwards, they just kept on going, while Kaifa was standing free to receive the ball and go for the line. McClutchie was pointing at him when he gave his instructions, but Kaifa never got the ball. McC looked quite angry (and Fakatava frustrated). I blame O'Connor who had another go at the line at that point, just before the ref blew his whistle. It was also O'Connor (then the captain) who decided to take the kick.

I think both sides would be disappointed they didn't finish that one off. If Wellington lose to Canterbury next Friday, they will then be in must win territory for the rest of the season. Bloody hope they don't go down again.
