CWC Final - Black Caps v England

guptil picked up 3 runs ? by turning ones into twos. still big call i wouldnt have wanted to make it.i might have sent in tayler

Not having it.
We won the 50 over contest by virtue of less wickets lost.
Bah humbug
I agree with this.
Runs
Wickets
Boundaries
If those don't separate you, THEN have a Super Over, because it's like dropgoals for Rugby tie breakers. -

So who else is bleeding out the eyeballs at work today after a marathon effort last night?
Dragging myself to the office now, it’s going to be a long day
-
What a gut wrenching way to lose. Overthrows off the bat that wouldn't have been taken except for it trickling to the boundary and then most boundaries as the tie breaker.
-
Our dial in meeting has been postponed which might alleviate the mood somewhat.
Hey, better England than India or Australia right ?
-
I'm not feeling down on the game since we didn't lose the match nor did England win. And neither did Australia or India so that's good too.
But there will be an * next to the 2019 CWC winner's name stating *drawn final with New Zealand.
-
@Sneakdefreak wouldnt have been if we had won
-
Well fullas and fullesses it was a wild ride. I couldn’t post during our bowling, was on the edge of my couch.
I can’t really fault our effort or even our decisions. Guppy faced one ball in the super over, can’t be too critical there. Some of our lower order batters faced some damn good bowling.
We bowled so well in the conditions and under the pressure of an away final.
Congrats to England.
The drama of sport wins out again.
-
In this political correct world of everyone being a winner I'm shocked no one has suggested we have the cup for two years each.
-
You can't award the trophy by count back. Make them do another super over with different combatants until a winner is found
-
It feels very weird - still pondering that deflection off Stokes' bat and the fact that it took it from 7 off 2 balls to 3 off 2 balls. Cannot remember every seeing that over many years of watching cricket and the fact that it happened at that stage of a World Cup final is just bizarre.
And Trent - don't step back bro
-
Also, I'm so proud of this team. We missed out by the tiniest of margins and so it's super tempting to rehash a thousand moments and ask what if, but I think that's the wrong attitude to take. I love this team and I'm stoked at what they've achieved.
Still hurts like hell to have come so close and not got there but sometimes that's how it breaks.
-
I think I would have been ok losing in a second super over, bowl off, wickets, higher place in the round robin etc. But number of boundaries is fucking stupid. How you get runs shouldn't determine a World Cup final.
-
Jammiest trophy lift since that guy won the olympic speed skating gold when the whole field went down in the final
-
Absolutely great game to be at.
Only just saw replay of double hit for 6. If that is in the rules it should be changed.
England were second best, but owing to a sequence of rule oddities have their name on the trophy.
Feel like Black Caps deserve a ticker tape.
So proud.

That deflection was almost hand of god-ish in its game turning fortunes.

Or who won the game in the group stages.
Which of course would have screwed us but would be more fair.
-
Bizarre ending but well done England I guess. Lets face it England hardly ever win anything so hope they enjoy it. Any number of ifs and buts could be pondered as to how they won that one, a deflection for six is a bitter pill to swallow though.

You can't point at any one thing. England got the rub of the green many times, both in luck and by the umpire.Should have been Kane needling a 4 rather than Guppy running himself out...
I didn't get to see the whole match - what was the rub of the green from the umpires?
-
Knighthoods all round then for the English team. Except their captain, of course!

Some of it was self inflicted. Nicholls and Guppy blew our review when he was plumb lbw, which had a flow on effect when Erasmus gave Rosco out LBW off a ball that looked high in real time and we had no review. He also gave Roy not out lbw first or second ball, DRS was about 1cm from over turning but went to refs call
-
well, shit aye.
I'm actually not sure how to feel. We can't even fall back on being beaten by a better side on the day. Because we weren't beaten.
Get my rant in. What fuckwit came up with most boundaries as the 2nd tie-breaker? Effectively England have been handed the cup for having less scoring shots than us? In what way is that a good measurement? Get absolutely fucked. I am not having that. Celebrate you pommy (UN) fucks, we all know it feels hollow.
Two bad pieces of luck in the last couple of overs. But that overthrow 6 is about as unlucky as you can possibly get. Right there you know it is not your day. Fucking hell.
I thought we were 30 runs short, turns out we were one. Imagine if we didn't duck under the last ball of the innings?
-
On the selections for the super over, i think they got it bang on, those are the two i would have gone with. Our two best power hitters who can go from the first ball. Guptill is also really quick between the wickets. And they damn near pulled it off.
-
Boult catches Stokes and we win. Sadly, he was 6 inches too close to the rope and didn't notice till too late.

After round one we beat SL by ten wickets and the Windies beat Pakistan by seven. They went to the top of the table when I reckon we should have.
Why do the organisers not seem to give a fuck about wickets lost in the overall scheme of things ? it should be the most important part of any complicated cricket equation.

That was the last chance for many of this group, gutted for them

Guptill and Southee have both fallen off a cliff in terms of form which they may never get back. I think it's safe to say they won't be there next time round.
you'd imagine Rossco will have retired by the next cup but the others are all young enough to have another hoon you'd imagine.
-
Next CWC is in India so unless we acquire a bunch of allrounders who are spin bowlers I doubt we will be in the final again.

This is about where I'm at with it too. Although in a way I feel bad for both sides as England will always have a bit of asterix on the title and the lack of closure will likely torment NZ more than a loss. I'm not entirely sure I would be that much happier if NZ had "won" on an equally ridiculous countback.
The NZ team can be very proud, they played great cricket and did not wilt under the pressure and in the last two games added more to the lore of NZ cricket history than other teams did in an entire four year cycle. I juts hope for the Black Caps that in time the absurdity and incredible nature of the result or lack thereof a little easier to swallow.
On the bright side I look forward to Kane on commentary at the 2039 CWC semi final talking about this game at length...

Latham, Nicholls, Kane, Blundell, Mitch, Sodhi, will all be there. Boult is 30, not sure about Henry. Neesh is one injury away from retirement. CWC in India will be tough, the last 2 cups in conditions favoured us more than the subcontinent teams

Or one injury away from being a specialist batsman.
You'd imagine the luck of the Colin's would have well and truly run out by 2023 too now I think about it.
Bad news for Black Caps fans is we are gonna need to find not one but TWO openers given Nicholls will be well and truly ensconced in the number four batting spot in all forms of the game.

Neesh is good enough. And he's already got test 100s to his name. Who knows what type of opening batting the next cup will require. But they have to make room for Blundell and Latham so one has to open

Would be a shame if this occured, Neeshams bowling in this cup has been inspired at times.

Boundary countback rule. What a load of shite. I would have been quite happy if they based it on win-loss during the tournament, but boundaries. That's just pøø.
But plenty to be proud of. Hopefully the ABs go one better and don't lose due to a dropgoal countback or some shit.

For sure, it's no fun eating another shit sand-which and being left to celebrate a another great moral victory. But all in all it's a great team to support, they've certainly put NZ cricket in a better spot than it was at the toss, and to see those guys stand up when the pressure was on was great. Couldn't be prouder of this side and I think they did a lot today to shake the soft-underbelly tag that many have put on us.
The most trying aspect for me is that high-stakes games like this are not the norm for this side and over time we may return to a steady diet of games in front of 800 people at University Oval. We do have a big summer coming up with the England tour and Boxing Day/New Year's tests there to focus the mind - so perhaps the good times can keep rolling?
