Brings back memories of a game I spectated at in Hunterville way back in 1988. Not quite as much surface water on the field in Apia though. Apia Park still barely makes the amateur level when compared to Wellington's Martin Luckie Park for mud heap ratings. It sets a very high benchmark for muddiness.

Samoa win 25-17. Good game considering the poor conditions. The Samoan 8 Amosa was the best for me. He had a great game off the back of the scrum.

    @Bovidae

Fiji sent over a 2nd team to Rotorua to play NZM with a bunch of local players

Add Radrada and Fiji would have beaten NZM 2nd time round if they had the cattle

They prioritised the PNC 1st game in Japan

Is Sam advocating that even less test rugby should be played in the PIs? Should have just played it at Albany?

    Yeah, its WRs fault.

@Rapido I think Sam is advocating for putting player safety first. The risk of injury is huge in games played under these conditions, on a shit field like that.

It also wasn't a good game to watch. Good rugby isn't possible in a mud pool.

*Teams must inform the referee of any objections before the match starts.

*The referee will attempt to resolve the issues and will not start a match if any part of the ground is considered to be unsafe.

    Yeah, World Rugby's fault ...

    It's a winter sport, FFS.

Someone might get hurt by this soft, gentle, spongy field?

Maybe WR should build and pay for a retractable roof over Apia Park.

Despite what I say. That is maybe the most extreme field conditions i have seen.

Combination of the 75 underwater test at Eden Park v Scotland with the 1996 Athletic Park mud bath v Wallabies.

Just dont see the value in moaning to WR about a rare PI located test match in a tournament receiving a WR subsidy to actually even take place. Talk about biting the hand ....

@Rapido I think there may be more at play than we know. This game was officially a home test for Tonga, but it was played in Samoa. Maybe, one of the reasons to play this game in Samoa was that the stadium in Nukuʻalofa wasn't up to the required standard, and then it appears that the stadium in Apia isn't either. I'm just guessing, but there may be factors we don't know about.

That 96 test was classic Athletic Park. The rain dripping on us was literally brown from the rust. The old man scored some free tickets from one of his AB mates. Great afternoon for 19 year old MN5, best bit probably being the contraband hipflasks we brought in.
